I'd like to save up until 2010 and buy a (2009/10) '62 American Vintage Fender. Anyone have one? Any pros/cons to consider? The 3-tone looks beautiful and I'm having a severe case of gear acquistion syndome...I may need to buy some picks or something just to soothe the guitar gear need inside. 8)
Thanks for your time! :D

That is an excellent bass. You can't go wrong with either the Jazz or Precision models of this year.

You'll probably find more owners of the Jazz model in the JAZZ Forum than here in the PRECISION forum. I've played one of each for a few minutes and if I wanted a Jazz that would be one I would consider. The Precision model has some advantages too. I initially thought the Jazz sounded pretty "bright" for a passive bass and in the brief few minutes I was checking it out I couldn't get a deep lush tone into the MarkBass 12 inch combo I was also trying out. The 62 P-bass was really more my thing.

Both the 62 Jazz and Precisions are completely done in nitrocellulose lacquer, which is what I want in a high end bass. Second, while the Jazz is somewhat of an oddball bass because of the unique stacked controls, I really like the control setup.

For a while these were offered in Lake Placid Blue, but now you can only get it in black, Olympic white or sunburst.

PICKS? On a bass?
(Just kidding! Not starting the Pick vs. Fingers war again.)

Thanks for your answer. It would be my first bass (so I don't know if I'd finger or pick  ). I have an American Strat and would love an American bass. I figure if you treat your guitars right...they'll treat you right. Plus when you have a good instrument it inspires you to learn I figure. Again thanks for your response-this thread was looking quiet :D

Actually the country of origin of the instrument matters less than the DESIRE of the player.

I was a brand snob. It had to be a USA Fender up till 5 years ago. Since then I've been playing anything I can get my hands on, just trying and using basses made everywhere! Japan, Mexico, Korea...and my favorite is actually a CHINESE knock off that I heavily modified. It is probably a 1 out of 10,000 shot that anyone would find wood from China that sounds this good. The Chinese knock off is my number 1 player. Fender should sue them.

My point is....tone is where you find it. Vibe is very important. How do YOU feel when you play it. Are you happy? I've bought and sold a lot of USA basses that were just plain mediocre. When you find "THE ONE" for you then you'll know it. It might be a basswood or agathis P.O.S. that nobody else would want. PLAY EVERY BASS you can get your hands on. No 2 are identical. When you find "THE ONE" you won't care if it was made on Uranus.

Or in Uranus
I have a Squier Vintage Modified P-Bass that has replaced my MIA Fender. It felt too good in my hands for me to put down. The MIA has been sold.

So true, I replaced my Stu Hamm Urge, 1st gen with a BTB. So it's how the bass feels...granted the Stu Hamm plays well, but something about the BTB and it Bartolinis that just felt right at the time...then I replaced that with the Squier VM...go figure right
