i wonder why i can order a pbass neck for my jazz bass?

i understand fender wanting to protect themselves from all the chop shops out there, but i really dont want to have to buy a whole bass just to pull the pieces off of it and never use it again...

Well, you have four options as I see it,

1. You can buy a whole P bass and take the neck and then sell the rest.

2. You can buy a replacement neck off of one of the licensed Fender aftermarket manufacturers (Warmoth, Mighty Mite and the like), and swap your tuners and stree tree over. The main problem with that is that there will be no headstock decal if that matters to you.

3. You can scour ebay for a P neck someone else has taken off a Fender. (which are alot more common then you think, many people prefer a J neck and have their P necks swapped out, I believe there is a seller now who has MIM P necks up. I don't get it either.)

4. Or you can go all out and order a CS J with a P neck...which in the short run, financially may seem like a bit much, but if thats the set up you want at least you know you'll likely never find another stock J with a P neck that'll beat it.

That's all I got, sorry if I wasn't a big help.

Warmoth gets my vote on necks, sooooo many diff't necks for J bass. I like the Maple neck with birdseye maple fr board - it's pricy tho - $409 before s/h. Or Ebay like the suggestion b4 mine.

yeah, i have a warmoth. one of the 75 maple with black binding and block inlays. i bought it for my mexi jazz. it improved the tone quite a bit.

but when i put that neck on my american orange ash body, i was really let down. the fender american standard series necks are the best out there for the most fender like tone. plus the rolled fingrboard edges are the bomb.

i just wanted a wider nut width for my jazz, and i have to buy an entire bass just to do so...

Really? I do like the binding and the block inlays too. Too bad it's not what it's cracked up to be. From what I understand the neck stays straight better than our old tech (single truss rod no reinforcement) necks tho, sinc e they also use the single truss rod but 2 reinforced rods on the sides.

at first, that neck was the shiznit! it did wonders for my mexi-jazz bass.

but it did not do any justice to my american jazz. it made the bass sound... brittle, if that makes any sense.. lol
