Right now at musicians friend you can get the highway 1 P bass for about 20% off.. I have been playing bass with my band for about 8 months and we are starting to gig quite a bit. I currently have a squire vintage modified 70's jazz bass which has been great, but after playing my schools new highway 1 jazz bass for awhile I realized how much better it played.

I tend to go for a really deep bassy sound, and from what I understand that is what the P bass does best. Unfortunately my local guitar shop never seems to have any p basses in stock so I have yet to play one... So I have no idea whether not its good or not.

I can get the bass for about $200 off, but I think I'll have to order it tonight, does anyone have any suggestions or opinions about the Highway One P bass?

I have one and I enjoy playing it. I also have a Squier VM P-bass, and I enjoy playing that bass. Of the two, If I could only take one bass with me to a jam/gig, it would be the Squier. I really like that bass, and for the money it's a great deal, so are the Classic Vibes. I have a set of SIT flats on the VM and I like its thumpiness.
However, these are just my opinions. Don't rush your decision. Try out as many basses as you can get you hands on. What is great in my hands and ears may not be in yours.

I agree with ZOD about the Squier VIBE series. A WINNER! So is the Vintage Modified series. I haven't EVER heard anyone say anything bad about them. I want to try one of the VIBE series myself and that is probably going to happen.

Several of the ONLINE dealers are cutting prices as I type this on American Standards and MIM Standards too! So far ZZOUNDS and SAMEDAY MUSIC have done this and the rest will follow suit. It is supposedly a "Summer Sale."

Actually I've found that the MIM Standards are excellent values too! Highway One's have slightly better electronics and hardware. The MIM Standards have come a long way, especially in the past few years.

Now about the Highway One series. As with any model there are some that are better and others that are WAY worse than the rest. That is why I always say PLAY IT. BUT, since you can't get near one, buy one and try one. Most of the online dealers have an exchange policy, so if it isn't what you expected...just send it back. The HO models should be better than the MIM because they cost more, but I'm not sure the extra money for a HO makes them a better value.

No matter which P-bass you buy, MIM, HO or USA... the neck is gonna be a little wider than a J-bass. The tone is going to be a little richer and mellower...it will have less noise...and you'll only have two knobs to fiddle with.

I find ALL these points an advantage to a P-bass. How much wider is the neck? 0.125 inches or 3.3 mm. Doesn't sound like a lot but it makes a difference when you wrap your hand around it. I like the wider neck myself but then again, I have huge hands.

If you intend to play both the new P-bass and the Squier VM...the difference in neck width could make a difference. But I think you'll really enjoy one. If I could have ONLY one bass it would be a P-bass. No contest.
