I have recently bought a fender p bass from a garage sale. It was in pretty bad shape with eggshelled bodywork and water damage to body and neck. I have stripped the body to bare wood to do my best at a restoration and noticed a few details that makes me question its authenticity.
1) The Fender headstock decal looks legit as does the serial number underneath (E834920), however the Precision bass part is in bold capital letters and is unlike others i have seen.
2) There is no date on the heel of the neck. There is however PB-4557 Z stamped onto the end of the neck that is in contact with the body. The truss rod is a phillips head type and looks appropriate for the time.
3) There are 2 stamps on the back of the body. The first are the numbers 3494 and the second FRR 49 in circle.

I will probably restore this bass anyway to keep me out of mischief, but it would be nice to know it was genuine before i invest too much time and money in it. Any advice would be appreciated.

Cheers Andy
PS I have some pics i could email if that will help!

Go on ebay and look at basses from 1983 and see if they look like your bass. Do a google image search too.

I have to see it before I vote on its legitamacy.
It sounds like you could have a 1988 Fender American Standard Precision bass but I have to see it before judging. Please post a few pictures.

The fact that its water damaged is sad but they do dry out and you can salvage a lot of basses that were soaked at one time.
If its a good playing bass, its worth saving.

Does your decal look like this 1988 one?

It might put your mind at ease if it does. If it doesn't...still might be legit but can't say without seeing it. I can't authenticate anything without at least seeing photos as that would be completely irresponsible.

Have you looked under the pickups for a sticker or markings?

Hi brotherdave
It looks similar to that but could also be a MIJ from 1984-7. The decal is similar with Made in Japan underneath and I think some of the damage may be deliberate to get rid of this. I have no webspace to upload pictures, but would be really grateful if i could email you some.
Cheers

Here are AJ's photos.

First the BOD. Notice the CNC hole is in the right place.

The neck pocket with body code stamps:

Check out the body checking. WICKED!

Considering the finish is so rough the neck might be ok. Here is the Truss Rod Adjustment Point:

Finally the all important headstock decal. Sort of rough but you can tell.

So you should have enough now to make an intelligent vote in AJ's poll.
