I am having a problem with my Precision Bass.
I bought a small Peavey practice amp, and it sounded fine at first.
But as time went on, I began getting a really bad sound out of my bass.
The sound from it sounds very much like a wireless mic does when the battery is going down. It sounds like 40% static, 60% bass.

I've checked the cord, took the amp and my bass to two other houses where it sounded fine, AND when you take yoru hands off the strings I get a hum like a bad grounding.

I even tried plugging the bass into a preamp, then into a mixer, to a PC, and still got the static sound

Could I have a grounding problem in my house?
Could the bass have a problem?

It could be a ground problem in your electrical wiring, an amp issue or a ground problem with the bass. Or it could be a combination of things.

First, take the bass and your cable to a dealer and try out some amps. See if you can duplicate the problem there. If so, you have a problem in the instrument or cable. Switch cables and if it goes away it is the cable. If it doesn't go away with the store cable it is a ground problem in the bass which isn't uncommon and usually really easy to fix.

If the bass and cable both work fine on a new amp at the dealer then look at your Peavey amp.

The jacks on most of the little Peavey practice amps are printed circuit board mounted. It might need to be repaired, also pretty easy for a tech to fix. Moving the amp to a friends could have wiggled it around a little causing it to temporarily make good contact with the PC board for a while, while moving it back home jostled it the wrong way again so the problem reappeared.

A ground fault in the wiring in your home is not so easy to fix though.

Sometimes interference can come from transformers, neon signs and other sources like that nearby. I used to have a neighbor that was a ham radio operator and whenever he was talking I could actually hear him on my bass, my phone and my TV. Also some satellite data uplinks from banks and the like can create bursts of interference.

Without actually looking at it in person, it is hard to say exactly where the problem is. But you can at least eliminate the bass and cable by taking both to a dealer and trying their amps.

I had the same problem with my bass
just take off your pick guard and sauder your grounding wire back if it isn't out then it might be the entire output jack if its that you need to replace it.

if your bass and amp combo sounded fine at 2 other different houses, i wouldnt think it would be your bass or your amp.

are you using the same outlet to plug your amp into in your house ?

if you are you might want to check the recepticle isnt broke and not allowing enough voltage/current through the outlet to properly power your amp.

Take your bass to a completely different part of your house and plug it all back in and see if that fixes it.

it sounds more like a problem in the circuit in your house.

if it was you bass or amp, it would do the same thing at someone elses house, not just your house.
