some of those you mentioned are also made for bass (flanger, chorus). the problem is on some of those guitar pedals is that they are optimized for the higher frequencies of the guitar so it may not sound as good as you would hope it will. The best thing is to take your bass to a music store and try them out if you can.

I would recommend the same things, although I happen to have a guitar multi effect lying around and some days ago I gave it a try and it isn't so bad. I tried overdrive, distortion, fuzz (the fuzz sound was killing but acceptable if you want to play some really extreme experimantal stuff) and wah which didn't sound so fine - it was too dry, had no low ends.

So my answer would be yes, it does work, however if you want to have a really rounded tone, you'll have to see about the bass pedals.

I've tried several guitar pedals with basses --

flanger - works okay with both fretted/fretless, active pups, passiive pups.
wah - not too hot except with the Ocean fretless with active pups
chorus - again, not great except with the Ocean
BBE Sonic Maximizer - works okay with all

The effects work least well with the fretted and fretless P-basses and the SG reissue. They work modestly well with the Ibanez 6 string and the Ocean with active pups -- both cases (so I'd guess) where the bass emphasizes higher frequencies.

So depending on the bass and frequencies you boost/cut for your sound, I'd say guitar pedals work from not very well to fair.

The first pedal I'd buy would be a compressor. I use the Aphex Punch Factory. Love it. Won't play in public without it. Fabulous! Has two knobs and really easy to set up. Set it and forget it. Can get kinda hissy in a guitar amp, but doesn't hiss in my Ampeg or Line 6 rigs.

Secondly I'd buy an enhancer like the Sonic Maximizer or the Aphex Bass Xciter. I use the Aphex version, again LOVE it. The Sonic Maximizer is a similar device.

I have also used a Behringer BDI21 which is the knock off of the Tech 21 Bass Driver and the Tech 21 Bass Driver too.

All these are tone enhancers and not really effects. But, I don't use delay, flange, distortion or wah etc. I play old school.

I'm more like a multi effects guy but pedals...

lets see.. Compressor for guitars also works for bass..
and so are Delay, Flanger, Octave and Phaser

For Chorus, I think Boss has Bass Choruses.

As for overdrive, fuzz, filters, there are a lot of those made for Bass trying looking around MXR, Electro Harmonix, Boss, DigiTech, DOD ... etc

Be careful when using some guitar pedals especially the Big Muff, they cause some loss at the low end..

I've used wah pedals as a midrange shaper. You can sort of shift the bass's voicing to low or hi mids, and you just leave the pedal in that position. It works surprisingly well.
