Mike Mills played a Ric early on in REM (through Murmer and Reckoning). Anybody know why he switched?

I'm not exactly sure, but my guess is, and I've heard other artist say this like Bruce Foxton of The Jam who played a Ric then switch to P-bass - is because it has more meat or "more balls," as Foxton said!

Mike Mills played jazz bass too early on, but now he just plays p-basses.

yea, for sure the P Bass has meatier, chunky sound... I always thought the Ric bass complementing Peter Buck's Ric (I believe a 330) was a great part of their sound during the early years of REM. I guess as their music progressed the P Bass became more versatile.
