You guys should check out this thread. It's basically a guy building a 57 P-Bass from scratch. Abiut the only thing he didn't make were the tuners and the strings. the guy is in Israel and he was building even while the Hezbollah was lobbing rockets at him (he mentions it in his thread)...the end product is truly amazing...Leo would be proud.

Check out the "56 clone" he built too. He has a real command over the whole process. Incredible!

I saw that after I posted the comment on the '57. And he seems to be doing it with fairly ordinary tools. I was looking for some sort of CNC machine but there's none to be found in that little "hole in the wall" shop. It just seems to be a regular "joe" that knows what he's doing and knows how to use what he has at his disposal in the way of tools.

He's making them the same way they did PRE-CBS. Using templates. There is no CNC involved.

If you read through the thread, it is interesting to note his wood selection methods and the importance he attaches to the piece of wood used and it relationship to the overal sound of the instrument.

What really blew me away is that he is buildong and winding his own pickups with incredible accuracy to the originals.

This guy is a genius. I'm not so impressed by winding pickups. All you need is a winding machine...but what does impress me is that he actually builds the entire pickup! On top of that he built the winding machine out of an old sewing machine and put a counter on it that counts the turns. Can't find ferules? No problem! He'll just make them from scratch! Pretty sharp cat! I sure would like to have that '56 he built. Sort of inspiring isn't he? Makes me wish I'd taken shop instead of band. LOL And his straight job is in software but he uses no computers. THis is his hobby. Amazing.
