Hello - I've got a 2008 MIA Precision, solid black with maple neck.

I never noticed until recently, when I was cleaning the black body, that there's something to the finish that I don't quite understand. Looking right at it - it isn't a matter of "the right light" or "the right angle" - I can see allover the finish that there are sort of tiny creases and bumps in the black paint. Not a single part of the body looks entirely smooth. It still feels smooth, but it's definitely a visible effect. When I do look at it from a certain angle with light, it looks like the black finish has almost sunken into the wood grain, or something. It almost looks like it could start cracking.

Can't get a camera. It kind of looks like the 'orange peeling' in this picture, only it feels smooth to the touch: http://www.ronjoseph.com/expert_witness ... eel_lg.jpg

Is this kind of thing normal with basses? Am I getting worked up over nothing? Does it have anything to do with Fender's new 'thin finish' for the '08 MIA basses?

I think it has everything to do with the new "thin finish". I have an 08 MIA Precision and Strat and they both have this quality to them (while both instruments are 3-tone, it seems be more noticeable on my Strat). You can really see the texture of the grain through this finish! The clear top coat acts as a smoother and a protector.

It might look good with a sunburst, but it just looks cheap with a shell black.

I don't think I'm going to worry too much about it, though a knock-off of the price would have been nice. :D

Oh well, the only person that will ever notice is me anyways, and I figure if it ever gets too dinged or scratched up I'd get it re-finished anyway. It's an '08, not like it's going to hold much value down the road anyway.

If by american vintage modified strat you mean the vintage hotrod series then its a long time suspicion that fender make those finish's to age fast. My 57 hotrod has only been played 10 times since august and already has quite a noticable paint sink effect. Forum user Mr Bill has the same with his. There have also been a few counts of customshop models sharing the malaise that also have thinskin finish's.

Bassman101.
That is not paint sink. It looks like the worst case of orangepeel i've seen. Do you use a guitar stand with some kind of foam padding. It has been known for nitro finish's to react badly to them. I'm not sure but think your guitar is a urethane finish which excludes it from that theory. All i can surmise is that its a paint flaw in either application method or in the chemical makeup of the paint. It should be covered by the lifetime warranty eitherway.

No no, the picture was something I found on Google to demonstrate what my bass kind of looks like. The black paint looks rippled under the gloss top coat. It's consistent throughout the entire body like that. I take my bass into a Fender licensed technician for its check-ups and I'm going to ask him about it, but I don't want just another replacement from Fender if the same thing is going to either come that way or happen eventually.

It shouldnt happen at all mate. Look at all those urethane finished guitars from the 80's and 90's, they dont do it. I'm certain Am standards are urethane finished and shouldnt do it either. There could be a case for the highway1 guitars to react to a stand or some other material.

Please let me know how this turns out. Do you mind if i post a link in the strat section? there are several guitar finishers there who will be interested.

I get more than confused by all the various strats and thats my main instrument.
The paint sink on hotrods is quite hard to snap. If you manage to get a photo of that then your the next david bailey  .

It should be covered by warranty whatever it is.

I can probably get some pictures of that American Standard HSS strat - I'll try to post them here for you and Bassman 101 - you'd probably like to see the "rippling" effect I'm referring to for comparison purposes. On the other hand, I'm pretty sure the store doesn't want me photographing the Vintage Hot Rodded one and posting pictures online.... :)

AB

I'd like to see those, thanks.
