Just back from the Jimmy Buffett show at the Vorizon Amphitheater in Charlotte. My first Buffett show since about 1981. I used to go see him every chance I got but got burned out on the mayhem.

I made friends with the original touring bassist for this band, Harry Dailey who later co-wrote "Volcano" which is something of a Buffett staple. Harry died about 6 years ago this coming June.

The current touring bassist is Jim Mayer, who's brother Peter plays lead guitar now. At first I thought Jim Mayer was playing a sunburst 51 RI with the pickguard removed. Then on the Jumbotron during a closeup of him I saw the telltale 12th fret inlay that meant it was a STING artist series P-Bass.

Jimmy Buffett went through 2 Fender Thinline Tele's, at least three acoustics, a Danelectro 12 string, a dobro looking thing and a ukulele. Jim Mayer only needed that one Sting P-Bass for the entire show!

This is the largest outfit I've seen Buffett tour with. 12 members! Up front left to right is 2 female vocalists, Peter Mayer lead guitar, Mac MacAnally on rhythm guitar and vocals, Captain Buffett, Michael Utley on keys and a trumpet player. The back row on risers is a Latin percussionist, pedal steel guitarist, trap drummer, bassist, steel drums.

It was a really good show. The theme is "SUMMERZCOOL" which is pronounced like "summer school."

I counted approximately 14 references to Charlotte, Carolina, North Carolina, South Carolina and other Carolina related things like the UNC Tarheels which always drew cheers. I found it annoying and manipulative, but everyone else seemed to enjoy it. I can see one or two localized references but this was way overboard.

On the way there I heard on the radio that the show as "sold out" but lots of the ticket holders apparently came disguised as empty seats. Maybe they got drunk tailgating and passed out in the Winnebago. I've never seen so many drunk people, even at a Buffett concert, which is saying something. One guy tripped and fell nearly landing on my lady. I stood up and gave him a wresting style "1-2-3, YOU'RE OUT."

Two Jimmy Buffett tickets, 294 dollars. One beer, ten dollars. Standing up and counting "1-2-3-YOU'RE OUT" when the totally drunk guy trips over your legs and lands face first on the cement...PRICELESS!
