A very interesting story with a pleasant ending worthy of WaltD himself. Its a sad fact that in the uk band leaders are manipulative power hungry no hopers. The ammount of bands ive been sacked from because i cant be manipulated (the building trade gives you spider sense for it, its so prevalent in it).

Hi Nik
Just realised you are based in the UK. I thought you were FROM the UK but living in the US. Shows how observant I am.
Yes you're right. As I mentioned earlier I am a Corgi Registered Gas Engineer
(Now a GAS SAFE registered engineer) and been on lots of major building sites all over the UK and yes building workers won't be pushed around as a rule.
Mind you if Vic had been the type of person who knew how to work with people and been an asset I probably would have supported him from the beginning. But he just wanted to be the star of the show.
I did run the Hi Cats from then on, but it was a democracy and I didn't become a dictator. I knew exactly how to get things done without getting anyone's back up. My real strength was the fact that the wages went right up. Club owners were actually ringing me up and asking to book us (Something that never happened before) so long as that sort of thing was happening I had no problem keeping the support of the group.

Over dominant band members are the biggest cause of bands not working in my opinion. I've had my fill of them too mate. So much so that i'm only just getting back into it after 3 years off. The band i'm just starting are an absolute democracy, we even play songs the drummer chooses. The rhythm guitarist/vocalist i'm pushing to be a performer not a musician. I've told him play when you want to I'll cover the rest of the time. You just concentrate on good entertaining delivery. Funnily enough we cover a shads number 'the rise and fall of fingel bunt' so vince can have a breather mid set. The only reason i happened on this thread is that were looking for a bass player. I thought check the bass forums for anyone in the locale (unlikely i know). Saw your name and thought 'i wonder if he lives anywhere near here'.

Glad your in work. I'm a plasterer by trade and have had no work since november. The country is going bankrupt i swear.

If he had the respect and was given authority to lead the band. If he wasnt underhanded and a downright snake in the grass, he wouldnt of needed his dad there. It would of been sorted out weeks before hand.

Hi Nik
Just got back to my computer after watching Ramsey's Kitchen Nightmares in the USA.
Vic's problem was that he tried to run the group as though it was his own business. With the group members being his employees.
His dad had owned a string of butchers shops but at the time of this story had reduced to only one. I don't know why. He might have sold the others off or lost them through lack of customers.
I think that his dad had been advising him on how to run a business and as you know, that was not the correct way. As I will mention in the future, (if I'm still writing this story), I make it up with Vic and he actually takes the hint and drops the Shadows scenario. He started another group and played the sort of music I had been begging him to adopt all the time.

I read the whole story and its great. You should consider doing a screenplay. I think your story would make a great movie. A film about a band that was one of the Beatle's contemporaries and the life a musician led in those times.

I have to disagree on the Democratic band thing. I think the best bands that I have been in have been run by a leader who made the final call when the band had a decision to make that was not clear.

Too often, a democratic band can end up going in circles because there is no person in a position to make a judgement call that is risky.

In your band, Vic was an $@!&#*% who was insecure and couldn't deal with a more talented member. I am glad to hear the you were able to rally the band around you, but the fact that you were getting more money when you persued your band concept made you the de facto leader of the band. Vic just didn't know it. yet. LOL

Great story

Just got back after doing a bit of joinery work in my daughter’s house I’m not a joiner but am willing to have a go.
Thanks for letting me know that the story is interesting.
I suppose I am being a bit of a worrier, but fhopkins just pointed out that there are over 1000 views. I only started using this website a few days ago and didn’t realise that those numbers meant people who were reading this.
Now I’m a bundle of nerves. I feel like I did on my very first appearance on stage when the curtains opened and hundreds of faces were looking at you, and you felt like running home.
It’s 11.30pm in the UK so I’ll open Microsoft word and start trying to remember what happened in the correct order.
If it takes too long I’ll have to post it tomorrow.
