When will Fender be able to replicate the orignal shell scratchplate ? The shell plates of today are nothing like the ones of the sixties.

The 62 Reissue tortoise was REALLY close. That is about as close as we are going to get I'm afraid. It had the yellow chunks anyway and a few swirls but the red chunks weren't quite right. But very close.

Yes I'm pretty sure he means pickguard. Pickguards are often called scratch plates...and if it is in the classic "Tortoise Shell" material you could further subvert that to shell plate." I do prefer the term "pickguard" myself as it is more universally understood.

Sorry Guys, I'm an old fella from Australia, maybe the young guys over here also call it a pick guard. But I still feel Fender can improve on the tortoise shell pick guard, maybe get Japan to have a look at it, they seem to be able to copy things pretty well, what do you think ? After all if you buy a custom shop instrument and pay that sort of money you would something spot on.

The problem with reproducing the original style tortoise shell pickguards is that the plastic used back in the 60's is toxic to work with and it violates current OSHA regulations in the USA.

The current tortoise shell PG is a close approximation of what used to be but you are correct in saying that it is not the same.
