So, today at a local music shop, the saleswoman handed me a Precision bass, and said it was the 50th Anniversary model. It was white finish with a white/black/white pickguard and a rosewood fingerboard. Anybody know how much that would be worth?

She offered it to me for $450, and I can probably talk it lower. It's used, but there's not a scratch, nick, dent, or anything on it. It fits the definition of "like new." Anybody know how much it's actually worth? Down the line?

And also, would refinishing it take away from its value?

It all depends on what model Precision it is. If they're selling it for $450 and it's Made In USA, you should buy it. I'm guessing it's Made In Mexico, in which case that's not really that good a deal. New MIM basses sell for about $450 and although they are a quality instrument, I can't see any MIM guitar being very collectible. Like I said, if it is Made In USA, you should grab it while you can, and if you're concerned with the resale value, then don't change anything on it. Basically any change to original stock will drop the resale value of an American made Fender. Even if you consider it an upgrade.

I concur with strauboids opinions with a few exceptions.

The going rate is now $620 USD for a Standard P MIM.

This might actually be a decent buy considering the condition is so good and closer to $300 would be a good price. That is about the going rate for a used MIM bass in 9 out of 10 condition or better. Which basically is what this is.

There was an official Fender MIA 50TH ANNIVERSARY model. It is Butterscotch Blonde with a a maple fretboard. There were only 500 made.

However there was no limited edition 50th Anniversary Standard P-Bass as with the MIA P-bass. One 1996 Fender MIM Standard P-bass is about the same as any other. They are not and are not likely to become collectible because there were so many made.

Even at a run of 500 the MIA 50th Anniversary P-bass will have trouble becoming a real collector instrument. Their value will remain about the same for the life of the instrument if maintained in the current condition and left original. As strauboids pointed out mods of any sort are ill advised on collectible class instruments. The greatest boost in value will come from price increases for new comparable instruments as was recently (and painfully) experienced...and for the current inflationary conditions on the US $. On the other hand I usually mod every bass I get my hands on in one fashion or another.

So I would look at this bass more as it compares to a 95 or 97 in price. It really is pretty much the same instrument minus the decal on the back of the headstock. It is in truth no more valuable.

Since the condition on this one is so good I might go to 400 if it was truly exceptional, but I'm thinking $300 is a more fair price. I know one 60th Anniversary P-bass recently sold for $250 here in my town, it was sunburst and still had the plastic covering on the pickguard.

Fender did issue an Official 60th Anniversary Standard MIM P-bass in Blizzard Pearl. It came with a nice Anniversary gigbag. Those were nice too, but not likely to be any more collectible than any other 2006 MIM P-bass because there were so many made.

Don't do a thing to the paint, keep it just the way it is, I have a Jazz 50th and the colour is Crimson metalic burst a colour they dont make anymore so just leave and enjoy, plus the pick ups are a little different than the norm. I get more compliments on my bass than you could imagine. The sound the color absolutely awesome, my tech said Fender did a great job w/ the 50th.
450 is a steal buy it! or i will lol

All of the the 1996 Standard basses , American or Mexican, were really no different than the 1997 or 1995 models. People who are trying to pedal them call every 1996 instrument a "50th Anniversary Model" because of the sticker on the back of the headstock.

Buyer beware. It is sizzle and not steak.
