Anybody have a good recommendation for a bass guy in San Diego?

We just got a 94 P Bass Lyte for my wife and it needs a little truss and action work. We're going to set it up with 3025s for her, and I want it dialed in by someone that knows basses. Anybody have someone special they recommend?

While I'm asking, How about Instructors? The last bass teacher I knew was Nathan East, and I don't think he's available anymore

Thanks! 8)

If you are ever in North Hollywood call John Wescott. Phone (818) 761-4156. Setups run 40 to 60 bucks. Randy Jackson gets his basses set up here. That is good enough for me. Enough said.

I emailed a gigging San Diego guitarist I met in Las Vegas a few years ago. They just got back to me recommending a guy named Fred Marotta at a place called "The Repair Zone" as the absolute best in the San Diego area. He actually built this other guy a guitar (vintage tele type branded NAKED GUITAR) which he can't stop talking about. Mr. Marotta has at least two other excellent techs working for him in this busy shop and they do warranty work for some major brands which is a good sign, but also often means long turn arounds. However turn around time is usually about one-week or less says my friend. Their shop is in the Kearny Mesa section on Ronson Rd at Mercury St. So if you can't get to Hollywood, this would be way more convenient for you.

Nice choice on the bass... I love those mid-90's Lytes.

I just asked a guy I know who plays bass in one of San Diego's fave bands. Here's what he had to say:

"Hmmm... I don't know if there's a "best" anymore (since Bass Alone closed its doors for web-only sales), but I like Moze's guitars in La Mesa -- he was the only guy who could get my fretless action where I like it -- or [blanking on the name] the tech who works at Guitar Trader/Music Power in Kearny Mesa. "

This guy is one of the most complete and demanding bass players I know (he used to take lessons from Nathan East, BTW).

Thanks for the tips, Guys...I' ve always used Moze, Walt always did a top notch job on my guitars for stuff I couldn't do (mostly nut replacements and fret jobs) but apparently he's cut way back on his hours.

Brother Dave - Thanks for the heads up on Repair Zone - I will have to check them out sometime.

I ended up taking it to Top Gear - they have been running a little hole-in-the wall shop down the street from us for 25 years, but I had never checked them out. I checked with a couple of guys locally, and their name kept popping up.

I Checked out their site before I took it in, and they appear to have a pretty high level of skill when it comes to restorations, so I'm sure they can handle a setup. It 's not like there was a lot that needed work - just truss and action for the new lighter flats we are putting on, and replacing one string ferrule.

I'll let you know how it is when I get it back.
