I have a real nice 75 Pbass (sunburst finish, maple neck) that I want to store for a while and was wondering what is the proper way to do so? Remove the strings or leave them on? Leave them on and reduce the tension or just leave them tuned?

Would it be better to leave it it's case or hanging on a guitar stand? It would be kept in a room with fairly well controled temperature and humidity levels.

Any expert advice would be much appreciated.

I don't know if I'm an expert, but I would probably just tune it down a half step and put it in it's case. One of the basses that I learned to play on was a 67 Jazz that had the same Flat wound strings on it that it was set up with, when purchased. At that time it hadn't been played it 20+ yrs and the strings were kept at full tension without doing any harm. I wouldn't try that with my newer MIA Fenders, but those older basses were really made to last a lifetime and put up with plenty of abuse.

I have no scientific data to back up what I'm about to say. It is just what I do.

I try to avoid exposure to temperature extremes and excess humidity. By extremes I mean going from really warm to really cold or vice-versa in short order This is a problem in some climates I'm sure, especially in winter. Gradual warming or gradual cooling would be better. Basically I don't leave my instruments anywhere I would be uncomfortable myself.

Overly humid conditions obviously can cause deterioration of the electronics and corrosion of non-electronic hardware. If you are comfortable then your guitar should be too.

If you guitar has a NITRO finish your tone will benefit from less humid conditions over time.

I am a believer in maintaining constant string tension. I never detune my basses UNLESS I'm shipping one or flying with one. In either of those cases I will detune just a bit, but not much.

Well put "Brother" I've actually been considering sleeping on the floor and letting the guitars have the bed. :)

I've stayed in some motels where the floor is actually preferable.
