Check out Craig's List www.craigslist.org they usually have some decent deals in the musical instruments section

I have a 500 watt, but I got this when I was gigging a lot back quite a few years a go, as a matter a fact 12 yrs a go was the last time I gigged, now all I do is play with the bass and not even set the volume up past 3...the wife and kids kinda complain of the rumbling anything past that

I got a couple of big amps too (one 800 and one 250) , but I don't gig much anymore, just an occational jam. I bought a 40 watt Peavey Max 112 for less than $200 and it is great for the money. I had no problem staying up with a 125 watt guitar amp.

I'll second Craig's List as a good option for used basses or amps. If no luck there, check your local shops for a new/used Standard P Bass.

As far as amps are concerned, that will depend on how many watts the guitar player(s) have and how heavy handed the drummer is if you plan on jamming in the garage. The general rule of thumb is 3x what the guitar player's amp is, but Peavey seems to know how to make a below 100 watt amp shake everything on the walls.
