Can anyone Confirm or Deny if this is a percision bass?

Someone Inow is telling me its a P-bass but I don't think so.

Any idea what kind of Fender bass it is?

The only thing I'm 100% sure of is, this is NOT a Fender.

If it wasn't for the substandard bridge, Grover type tuners & the telltale truss rod cover, I'd say the headstock shape looks a lot like a Tokai. But I do not think it is a Tokai either. Tokai did not use truss rod covers on their knockoffs, and their fretboards were more rounded at the bottom and not squared off like this one.

There is no telling who made this. I'm not leaning toward Teisco either.

From the cheesy bridge and non-Teisco/Tokai tuners I'm leaning toward maybe a Philippines made copy. Thousands of them were sold to US soldiers who brought them back on their journey home from southeast Asia. On your way home from the Nam, they looked enough like the axes back home and for $25 to $50 they looked like a bargain. Most were made in huts and hooches but there was one larger scale Philippines operation called FINDER that was mass producing copies of Fender instruments. This actually looks more Philippines made than Japanese because of the hardware and truss rod cover.

T-Dog; I believe that BrotherDave is very much correct in his summation. I even downloaded the 'tuner set and logo' image and used PhotoShop to blow up the image until it just started to pixelate and then backed off one setting. There are air bubbles under the "Fender" logo decal - which indicates poor attention to detail and a 'rush' to get it out the door.

The bridge frame material seems to be a crude stamping rather than the high quality product that Fender has used over the years, regardless of which continent the AUTHORIZED Fender® basses have come from.

While it resembles the American Standard and the pick guard dimensions in your image are very close, the screw holes nearest to the volume and tone controls have never been in those exact locations, as actually made by Fender®.

I'd have to agree that it is a cheap Southeast Asia knockoff... and worth next to nothing.

Good work Luke, I didn't even bother to compare screw holes.

This is so obviously fake that if I had only seen that cheesy bridge I would have said "Hootch bass!" But you have to hand to the people who did it....considering what they had to work with...they did a decent job. I could NEVER turn this out with hand tools! But somehow they did it thousands of times!

Dave - it just goes to show that persons desperate for cash will do just about anything to scam unknowing or careless persons who wouldn't otherwise fall for these shady 'business' ventures.

While the serial number is not visible in T-Dog's photos, I can imagine that it may be something like " Ho Chi Minh 1970-002 ". Otherwise, if it is from a location a bit farther south and breaks the first time it is played, it could give the term " Manilla Folder " completely new meaning...

I agree !.......look also at the back of the neck see how "brown" it is? i've never seen a Fender Precision with a brown back of the neck..also yes the headstock weak bridge and tuners give it away as well as the "air bubbles" under the logo.
Also count the screws around the pick guard...excluding the thumb rest I count 11. most(i think) precisions have 13...I may be wrong there.
For a back up or novice beginners bass? sure go for it. :D

Hi, it's my first post on the forum.
I need some some help with verification of authenticity of that neck.
I've searched for some photos of P-basses from 98-99 period but I've found only basses with another (two-colour, not black) types of logo on the headstock.
http://s568.photobucket.com/albums/ss12 ... 9494_2.jpg

Informations from http://www.guitardaterproject.org database:

Corona Plant (Fender), USA
in the Year(s): 1998 - 1999.

What do you think about that?
Thanks

PPP,

Welcome to the forum. Have you removed the neck? Are there any markings on the heel?

The problem is that I have only photos of that bass and only this one pic of the headstock (this one is the only one in fact which shows some details of the neck either). The body had been taken from another instrument so it can not be a hint. :?
