I have been a fan of Steve Harris Playing and Sound for 25 Years. I can't find a store within 100 Miles that has his Signature Bass for me to try. And they will only order one if I put down a payment. What if I don't like it? I'd be stuck. Would I be better off buying a American Standard Precision and changing the Pick-Up to that which Steve uses?

You're in a hole with this one. They are fairly different as Precisions go...the USA has separate neck & fingerboard with carbon fibre support rods, and a 1.625" nut ( a 'B' neck). The SH sig is a fretted maple neck (ie no separate fingerboard, so no rods, with a 1.75" nut ('C' neck). You're not likely to dislike it if you like Precisions. However, it comes fitted with Rotosound flats. The USA and all other Ps come fitted with roundwound strings.

I have an American Standard P-Bass and it plays and sounds awesome. You cant go wrong with one. But i too would like a Steve H Bass, it looks so cool and if it has the same sound SH's Bass has wow. It would be great for when we, my Band plays the Drop D Songs. Anyway i say test drive a AS P-Bass and see what you think. Im sure youll be happy with what you hear. Good Luck

I did get to play a A.S. P-Bass. It does sound great. I don't think that I'd be more comfortable playing a bigger neck like Steve Harris has, so I'll probably buy the A.S.

Thanks for the replies.

I had the same question before, and I ended up getting AS P-bass.

I think it has more features that I wanted such as the graphite reinforced truss rod, HMV bridge, Hipshot tuners, professional hardshell case. It aslo has more colours to choose from. I mean the SH Signature colour is really cool especailly if you're a big fan.

AS P-bass has a smaller neck as pointed out on an earlier comment, which are really love, I think it's the perfect size and shape for me. It's so comfortable. For me it's better than a jazz-bass neck, which I file a bit too small, and better than some of the wider P-bass necks.
