Well guys we lost another one to the Dark Side of the Force.

Can't save them all Brother Dave, some always have a way of falling between the cracks.

Hope he tried a Squier Vintage Modified, really nice bass and the price is nice.

Well, I did it. I got my first bass and amp. I ended up going with a Fender Jazz (I'm ducking for cover). Don't worry though, if my bass obsession is anything like my guitar obsession, then I will end up with a P-bass very soon.

Thank you everyone for your comments and insight. I appreciate it. I hope you don't mind a Jazz-basser hanging out here in the P-bass forum!

Not at all. :D Congrats on your bass and I think I speak for everybody here when I wish you many wonderful moments playing your Jazz Bass. (Or future P-Bass. :) )

p.s.: What kind of amp did you end up with?

rkithun,
I ended up with a Acoustic B100. I know it is a little too early to tell, but I'm not all that sure I will keep it. It doesn't seem to hold the notes without distorting at higher volumes. In other words, it doesn't get very loud before it begins to breakup. I bought it on a suggestion as a "great starter amp for the price". Maybe it is just too much of a "starter amp".
Anyway, I'm going to keep playing it for at least another 2 weeks or so and see if it just needs time to break in. Any thoughts?

Well, as brotherdave said in another topic, bass amps shouldn't be turned up so much, as they tend to clip at lower volumes as well.

I think you should take some time trying to get accustomed to the amp and if you still think it doesn't fulfill your needs and cannot live up to your expectations, you should change to another one.

I know a bassist who plays some sort of fusion of jazz, funk and pop in a band and he said he liked the combos made by Warwick. There are also Laney, Peavey or Hartke combos which could be good starters.

I myself use an Orange Cruch B35, a 35-Watt combo which is a bit heavy to just carry around but it certainly does the job - with a little less power one would need for confident gigging, I admit. Perfect to practise, rehearse or record with though.

I agree with Brother Dave, bass amps should be cranked all the way up. I could hear the quality of the sound diminish as the volume got past the halfway point. i am going to give it another couple of weeks before I reach a final verdict.

How do you like the Orange bass amps?

They seem to be absolutely all right. The looks are really unique and the tone has some really nice vintage vibe to it, although with a P-Bass it can get a bit crunchy with some specific settings. (Which could be great with a Jazz Bass and J-Pickups.)

All in all, I recommend bearing them in mind as an option -if you decide to change the Acoustic., and you will try them out anyway before checkout.

Note: The most powerful Orange bass combo will only give you 35 Watts of power! (As I said, for rehearsing, it's ok, for performing, I'm not sure. :? )

If I crank the bass control up on a MarkBass 12 inch combo it starts breaking up just past 1 o'clock also.

I've usually got the bass cranked almost wide open, the treble up about 2 o'clock and the mids set at around 10 o'clock. I then use the tone control on the instrument and don't fool with the amp anymore. With the tone set this way at half volume on the gain I figure I'm using probably about 80% of the available power. If I set all the tone controls flat, I probably could push a combo harder but I like the lush old school bass tones.

Hang around the noon to 1 or 2 o'clock position at the most on the gain and I'm usually OK. It an amp isn't loud enough at 12 or 1 o'clock, I need a bigger amp. My Ampeg BA115 and Peavey combos...same story. My Line 6 does great until between 2 and 3 o'clock also. I tried a Markbass 12 inch combo and after 2 o'clock it was the same result.

So when trying out a combo amp, set the tone the way you like and then crank it to half volume. If it isn't loud enough there, move on to something bigger.

The Orange Crush 35 gets a great tone, but is not loud enough for gigging with a drummer. A good home practice or recording amp though. Looks cool. But is short on other features like CD/MP3 input and XLR output.

I'm hoping you meant "NOT" cranked all the way up! I never said they should be cranked all the way up! LOL 12 o'clock GREAT, 1 o'clock at a really loud gig, 2 o'clock MAX! LOL

Yep new speakers have to break in. But really it is going to sound best at half to just a little past half volume.

Yeah, I figured I'm going to give this amp at least 3 weeks break-in time. I'll be playing it about 2 hours per day.
Thanks for the info. By the way, you put together a nice website there. Lots of great information.
