My 57 reissue has the raised poles under the A-string like the original 57, but not all of the reissues have them. Some are even across the poles like a standard Precision pickup. I've heard Fender manufactured them both ways over the years, but don't know what years they included the raised poles and what years they didn't. Anyone know?

That obviously is a difficult question. I think it depended on neck radius. The earliest P-Basses (First Generation Single Coils) had raised A-Poles. When the Slab basses came along the poles flattened for them. Since Fender was making the slab 12 and 7.5 radius necks simultaneously they had to have pickups for both. Sometimes they'd be short on one or the other pickup I suppose and fudge or just put in the wrong one by accident. Eventually they compromised on the 9.5 radius and found flat poles worked fine. For a while you could order either a 12 or 7.5 radius. Now they make both 9.5 and 7.25 P-basses, but not in the same plant. One of the very special things about Fender in the Pre-CBS era was the choice of neck radius or shape.

I posted this same query over at the TB forum and one of the guys who responded there seemed pretty sure all the AV reissues had raised poles, but another guy who owns two AV reissues said one of his had raised poles and the other didn't. Weird.

Interesting about the originals, Dave. Choosing my own neck would be cool, I've always played P-basses with C necks except for my 51 reissue with the B neck. Great neck on that bass!

I agree about the neck on the '51. Everything made of wood on it is on the money.

I also wanted to say that they maybe got the wrong pickup matched to the neck radius now and then. I've also heard of people removing the pickup, banging the A pole flat with a hammer and reinstalling. (NOT RECOMMENDED!!! LOL!)
