Hello all.

I just have a little question.
On my American Highway One p-bass i feel the strins are high over the neck.
They have always been like this since I've got the bass. And when I play typical slap funk the sound is not the same as my 92' j-bass.
I know the sound isn't suppose to be the same but still I feel like the sound is weak.

Hi Benjamin,

Your bass apparently needs some adjustments or possibly a complete setup. The definitive setup guide at: http://www.fender.com/support/basses.php is the official Fender method for setting up a bass to Fender specifications. This requires a capo, mechanic's feeler gauges and some basic tools and patience.

Depending on the string and string tension you may can set the bridge saddles a little lower, however with the lower tension strings I use and the heavy finger thumping technique I am prone to use sometimes I usually get it set to spec and then raise the saddles about half a turn higher.

There are alternate setup methods too. If you click the link in my signature below and scroll to "Instrument Maintenance" you'll find information on several alternate methods.

I personally prefer to let a tech with a lot of experience set it up with the strings I'm going to use on it indefinitely. Then when I change strings I use the exact same replacement set and change them out one at a time. There is no way I can do as good a set up as a really good tech who has done it hundreds of times. So I let them set it up once and use that as a starting point for very minor adjustments.

I have no problem (and actually enjoy) modifying my own electronics or replacing hardware like tuners, but when it comes to adjusting and shimming necks or doing any fretwork I know a really good place and take it there.
