Just to point out that one of my MIA P-basses has fender flats and the other fender 7250's, both through body. with no clearance issues.

ok to answer a few questions that came up in this thread. I have a 68 tele bass (just like the 51) with string through body and the strings I use are D'AAddario XL nickle. They have no silk wrap and sound almost as good as Fender strings. They come in double packs so they really keep the cost down. my favorite guage is 45-105 (the ones with fluorescent greenish yellow logo)

As for Flatt. thomastics JAZZ bass flattwounds fit perfectly, however they have a very unique feel. they are more flexible than anny other flattwound string I've tried so they are bright enough to slap with out of the box. but over time they mellow out like a good set of flatts should. but you may need to raise your action because these strings are very low tension.... and they cost a bit more than you're average set of strings (but you saved all that cash from buying D'Addarios right?)

my 2 cents I hope this helps, good luck.

PS has anyone tried DR Low riders on this bass? Apparently that's what Sting uses. 40-60-80-100 ( ithink nickel)
