I was wondering if it is hard to install straploks on a MIM P-bass? Does anyone have any advice?

If you know how to use a screw driver....you can put on strap locks! Just make sure not to over tighten the screw when you put the strap lock on or you might strip the hole.

If you do, a little Elmers glue in the hole followed by some wood tooth picks. Then try it again.

The screws are often a different size, depending on the brand of straplocks you are installing. I know the Schaller brand (which are the ones sold by Fender Accessories) have different size screws.

The toothpick/glue method works great. I use Gorilla glue instead of Elmer's wood glue with the toothpicks for the strap screw replacement. It is advisable to then drill a pilot hole before trying to remount the pin.

Whenever I have a bass that the strap pin keeps working loose on that is a foolproof way to fix it! I cover the end to be crammed into the hole in glue, cram it all the way into the hole breaking it off flush with the surface. I repeat with a second toothpick and even a third on a really buggered out hole. LET THE GLUE DRY OVERNIGHT. Redrilling using a very tiny drill bit is required. You get a really tight fit that way. It probably won't ever work loose again.

Also, I like to use the original screws (the ones you just removed) with the straplocks. That way you don't widen the hole and you can replace the original hardware.

Maybe that will work with some strap locks, but not with the Schallers that I've used which are the ones distributed by Fender Accessories . The original screw head is too small and will go right through the strap pin.

I was wondering about that. Could you use a small washer that will fit inside the strap pin so the screwhead won't slip through?

I'd use the screws that come with the strap locks. I don't think I'd want to count on a thin washer. But that might work. There isn't a lot of room spare inside the straplock pins.

I always use some brand of glue in the hole followed by some wood tooth picks then I use the original screws that came with the bass. I got Schaller straplocks on my basses. Dunlop makes real great straplocks too but they are more expensive then Schallers. Dunlop locks are getting a bit loss after like 2 months and Schallers does in like 3 weeks. I know couse I have Schallers on my Precisions and a Dunlop on my Epi Les Paul.
