Hi

Ive recently been given a Fender precision bass, i know its from the 70's but ive no other info about it.

How can i find out what year it was actually made, find out if its worth anything (not that im ever gonna sell it) and anything else really..

Cheers

Hi Innerise,
sounds like a good bass you got there, hang on to it!
What I suggest doing is having a look at some catalogues and seeing if you can find it. Also write in to bass player magazine with some pictures, they should be able to help. Tell ya what, just post some pictures on these forums, like this presicion bass one, the "all other bass guitars" one and any other bass forums in the net. I'm sure you'll be able to find someone that can tell you what it is. Lord knows there's plenty of bass players on the fender forum alone that are really experienced players!

Or you could try this: http://www.guitardaterproject.org/fender.aspx.

(I got to the site via brotherdave's website, there are some other really interesting things there as well! :))

You can further narrow down the date by checking pot date codes and the neck date too. The most recent part would count as manufactured year in an appraisal. Fender production years ran July 1 to June 30 back then. You'll have to remove the neck to check neck date on the heel. The month and year should be stamped on it. Something like "5 AUG 76" The "5" is the Fender neck code for a Precision neck and does not mean August 5th. The pot codes can be decrypted using the brief Pot Code Decoder section in my "FENDER FIELD GUIDE" on the RESOURCES page accessible from the URL in my forum signature below.

Someone just GAVE you one of the best gifts you'll ever get! You owe them big-time!

And I bet it will clean up nicely, too. Great looking bass!
