Hello to all:

I recently bought a Fender Precision Bass on ebay that is in mint condition for $200.00. It is an early 90s model that is candy apple red. It was made in Mexico and has a small insignia that said Squire. However, it clearly says in large letters Precision & Fender and lists the serial number and was made in Mexico. I am confused as to what the quality is of this unit. It plays very well and has a great sound. Does anyone know what this unit may have cost brand new? How does the quality compare to a Standard Precision? Is this the same as the current Squire series on the market today? I appreciate any information about this.

Thanks!

I am NO expert on the matter, but I'm assuming the Squier would have slightly lower quality then the MIM Standard P, being it's more of a entry level p-bass.

Couple of days ago I saw a video in which a man was playing Jazz and Precision basses, Fender then Squier in order to compare them, and it actually turned out that there is no vast difference when it comes to sound. Of course, the Fender ones had a more 'creamy' sound with more harmonics and broader frequency range, more accomplished but the Squier instruments sounded surprisingly good in comparison.

I also have a Squier Precision Bass and I can tell, it sounds great, both on a 200W Gallien-Kruger and on my 35W Orange combo amp. (Haven't played a Fender MIM P Bass, though. :? )

Hey. Of my own experiance i'd say that there's no real difference between Mexico or USA, but on Sqiure vs. Fender i'm not so sure. Even then does it bothers you? If you like it, just play it :D

These were made in the early days of the Ensenada operation.
I believe it probably has "SQUIER SERIES" logo on the peghead where current MIM Fenders will have the "DELUXE SERIES" logo applied.

They were only made in Mexico briefly while Squier production shifted from one Asian plant to another. Sort of rare, but not as rare as the "Made In USA" Squiers.

So far as differences the body woods, electronics and hardware were all less expensive. Same paint though, and the necks look very similar to me.

I have no idea what they sold for new. Someone in the Squier forum would probably know that though.

All I can tell you is Fender is higher quality compared to Squier. But Squier doesn't have horrible quality though.

I tried a Squire Classic Vibe P bass at Guitar Center the other night and was very impressed with the build quality and craftsmanship. I may end up going back and buying it.

I have a MIM Fender P Bass, MIM J Bass and a Squier Modified P Bass. While I prefer the sound of the Fenders at times, the Modified P Bass is almost effortless to play. I enjoy playing the Modified P so much that I've completely forgotten what it says on the headstock. Even the "label snobs" have kept their mouths shut. If you like playing the bass, get it!
