Hello Fender bass friends,

I was bidding on a bass on ebay. It was a 1996 Fender precision bass mim Squier series. What is this??? Is it a Fender or a Squier? What would you rate the quality. I didn't win the item and I'm kind of glad. My next question however I have a MIM Jazz, the Precision Lyte and a '94 MIM Precision. Both of the Mexi's have a silver logo. I have seen some though with later dates thatn some of mine and the logo on the headstock is just simply black. Are these "different" basses? I'm quite confused. The Bass that was the Fender Mexi Squier Series had a black logo on it to. Why??? I don't want to sound like a complete idiot but I really don't know. Can somebody help me??? Thanks!!!!!

Miketallica315!!!

The MIM Fender "Squier Series" Basses are just MIM basses that used excess Squier Parts.

My black P started out as one. (in the show your precision thread) It had an alder body, MIM pups, pots, and bridge, but the neck was definitely a Squier. It had that Squier vintage tint, not that that was a bad thing. However, the G slot on the nut was cut too close to the edge of the fretboard, and the fret work was a little rough. That neck was replaced with a Big Block P neck, which was far superior. I eventually replaced the pups with SD Antiquity Raised A's and added a Fender Vintage Bridge.

In the end, they are solid starter basses. Definitely a bit of a step up from a true Squier in atleast Wood and electronics, but you'll likely end up doing alot of upgrades. They are really good for project basses however as atleast you have a good solid starting platform for mods, and they can usually be had for dirt cheap.

In my old frontline mags...They were called "Traditional" models they had an all black Fender logo and the model name was darker than the Std MIM. I have never had one apart, the tuners were the exact same as what my 1996 MIM Jazz Fretless has on it.

These were made from around 95-98 or so, don't quote me exactly.

The jazz basses of this series had a funky 1 piece pickguard with no metal control plate, the pickguard covered that area too.

I know the guitar versions used the really cheap non-sealed covered tuners much like on the squier mini
