I agree, flatwounds will give voice to your MIJ P Bass. I have two P basses, both Japanese. One is an '89 with a G&L MFD pickup and the other is a '95 Foto Flame. The Foto flame has a big deep vintage sound and I use TI Jazz flats-JF344s to express its true voice, great for blues. The '89 has DR Hi Beam Flats which are stainless and have great highs for a little grind for Rock music. DR's are like Chromes but more expensive and with less tension.

All in all, even though I haven't yet tried them yet, (they are in the mail) I suggest the GHS Precision flatwounds 40-100. They are relatively cheap $25 and will last forever, everyone seems to like them and they are middle of the road tone wise.

OK consider it done, I´m going to buy flatwounds.
Now, I have another question, I called last friday to almost all music stores here in Costa Rica but the only flats they have are Magmas. Anyone with something about Magma?

After changing the strings for the 3rd time on my new Am Stdrd I started to think about ways to reduce fret wear. There was some good advice I read in the Strat forum... but none here. I'm using the nickel wound D Addario exl 170 (regular light) guage. I lowered the action a little so I don't press down so hard (I was used to higher action and played harder on the strings). Would higher be better or no difference? (there is no buzz right now) Any other good advice??

I've noticed over the years that some roundwound strings eat metal frets worse than others. So far I've had no issues with flatwound strings or with the TI EB344 PowerBass strings I've been using over the past 6 years.

Bare stainless steel roundwounds with very high tension seem to be the biggest offender by and large. However when you use a set that is either nickel or alloy plated and has comparatively low tension (the TI EB344's have both attributes) it minimizes the fretwear. Any sort of alloy plated wrap is usually kinder to the frets as is the plastic coatings used on some strings. Since you are using nickel wrapped strings already I'd say that the high tension might be causing the fret wear issue as you have to press down harder to get the string to fret.

Yes lowering action helps too since you don't have to press down as hard but that may not matter as much as lower tension and what the plating or outer wrap is made of.

I try to stay away from high tension strings as they are not only a truss rod killer but seem to contribute to premature fret wear too.

I agree. I have DR hi-beams which, although are stainless steel, are very low tension, and they've been known to be kinder on frets than many high tension nickel strings. I also happen to prefer the feel of low tension strings, but that is just personal preference.

Ok, now I know why nobody knows about Magma. Magma's are Argentinian strings, they are really good, but not sure if they are available on the USA.

Cheers,

Thanks for the good advice. I had recently switched to the lighter gauge strings a few months ago too and I 've always used the nickel plated rounds. I was also considering the Daddario Half Rounds ENRs with the same lighter gauge and tension as my current EXLs for a warmer tone. Thanks again!

A set of Rotosound 66 Swing Bass Strings, can cover anything.
A set of Tru Bass Nylon Tapewound Strings, beautiful for acoustic or deep, muddy and thumpy bass-lines (rotosounds again).

Ive got my eye on Some Rotosound Jazz Strings as well!

As you can see a real roto's fan.

Hope you are all ok,

JHoole

I have 2 pbasses with qp's (redundant right?) But I string one with flats (an off brand) and the other one currently has daddario E, A & D and some thing else G string. I love roto's! Roto flats are sweet and you can get em cheap from sweetwater.com (no pun intended)

The roto's that john entwistle used (swing 66 rounds I think) are my favorite roto's. They are designed to work with high output pickups (which p pups generally are). Just check out songs he used the spyder explorer. I believe he used the rotos on that bass and that bass had some hot pups. I also like the sound of his maxima gold plated strings (I've never used them but I have a friend on talkbass who has and I love john's tone when he used em)

my 2 cents

Fender comes stock always with rounds... let me find them really quick.

Edit: I found them... I can't find a link to them on the site but it is 'Fender Super bass 45-110' I think somethin like that.

I hope that helps
