has anyone ever tried Gallistrings from Italy? I was recommended them by the guy in my local guitar shop and i think they're pretty good so far. they're roundwounds and are coated so they last longer than normal rounds.

also can anyone recommend any flats. i've never tried them but always wanted to, i heard that GHS make quite good ones.

I have never tried Gallistrings, please let me know where you got them. If you are the kind of person that likes flatwound strings, I recommend Fender flatwounds, and I'm not just saying that because I'm on the Fender website. Fender has really good quality standards when it comes to strings. Flatwounds have a very mellow, jazzy tone, similar to an upright bass. Flatwounds are especially good on fretless bass-guitars and upright basses. I use Fender 9050L flats on my fretless bass, but they are sold in other gauges as well.

I use Elixir strings on my 84 PBass and I am more than happy.
0.45 I love them. Really friendly for my fingers, nice tone, friendly for the freat as well.

After changing the strings for the 3rd time on my new Am Stdrd I started to think about ways to reduce fret wear. There was some good advice I read in the Strat forum... but none here. I'm using the nickel wound D Addario exl 170 (regular light) guage. I lowered the action a little so I don't press down so hard (I was used to higher action and played harder on the strings). Would higher be better or no difference? (there is no buzz right now) Any other good advice??

Hi all,

Find a set you like and stick with them. Personally I use Ernie Ball flatwounds, good tone, dead smooth , if I can't get them then its Fender Flats slightly less tone, slightly less smooth.

all the best

Jav, Have you tried Flats yet?

P-Bass + Flats = Tonal Bliss

By fret wear, do you mean the fret wire developing grooves or dents in it, or the discolouration of the fret wire?
Or do you mean fretboard wear? The grooves on the fingerboard from fretting strings onto the wood.

Yea, frets developing the grooves/dents.

I was considering the half rounds or aka semi flats.

I play in the church, play all styles (gospel, funk, jazz, country style) and have always used Ken Smith RMML5. They are stainless and lighter than stock. I like to pop and do it commonly. Will flats be as effective? I have never tried them. Also, I use a Fender 100 rumble amp with a 1995 Pedulla Thunderbolt 5 string. Any help is appreciated. I do like the brightish sound of the Smith strings during normal playing but have had some set-up issues with the "pop" being on the too bright side.

Thanks for the advice

These are the best strings on a P-bass IMO:

I use D'Addario Chromes .45-.100 on my Precision, and XL .45-.105's on my other basses.

Hi Guys,

I have a couple of basses one JBass and one Pbass. I used to set them with Elixir strings the JBass is perfect with 0.45-0.105 but my Pbass is having some issues with round elixir. It doesn't have a bright sound, indeed sounds kind of weird, I dont know just dont like it. My P-bass is a 84-87 MIJ, what strings would you recommend me?

Cheers,
