For some reason lately I really want a p bass. Right now I have squire jazz and I have a few ideas for my next bass. The three I narrowed of down to are:
Highway one p bass (sunburst and white pick guard are cool)
American standard (worth the extra money?)
1951 p bass reissue ( I'm a tele fan)

It would be cool if you told me witch one is the best in your opinion and why.

The Highway One would be my last choice on this list, but it's still a nice bass. The new American Standard is just better, so I'd opt for it even though it costs a wee bit more. Remember, however, the American Standard comes with a very nice hardshell case. The Highway One doesn't, so when you add the price of the case the cost difference is virtually nothing.

As between the American Standard and the 51 reissue, that's going to involve more thought. The 51 has a single coil pickup as opposed to split coil, so it depends on what tone you prefer. Both have great necks. The finish is different, the 51 has a heavier polyurethane gloss finish whereas the American Standard has a lighter finish (which I like much better).

If money were no object, I'd get both. I own both, in fact (but my American Standard is a 5-string) and gig them each regularly. If forced to choose, I'd probably get the American Standard because I like the finish better but it's a close call.

Thanks slot that helps and good point with the case thing. I agree the 51 and standard both look nice but in an earlier post I asked how long they're going to make the 51. I would like both as well that might not be possible with my income... 0$... But maybe more soon! But still the 51 might not be around longer that change things for you?

I haven't heard anything official about discontinuing the 51 but I recall there was a rumor about that at talkbass when Guitar Center was blowing them out last Christmas. BUT IF that were the case then yeah I'd grab the 51 in a nanosecond. In fact, I just checked ebay and found this one with a really nice wood grain and a reasonable "buy it now" price from a seller who appears to be a retailer:

http://cgi.ebay.com/NEW-FENDER-51-REISS ... 7C294%3A50

I'd grab it.

Ahhhh! That rocks good price. And if anything those pics give me a better look at it. Right now I have 270$ I'm my amp fund and after I plan to get a job sometime and a new bass. And if that deals still there then i'll probably take it. But still I think the standart will still come some time after if I get the cash.

My two favorites are the 57' Reissue Precision and Americian Deluxe Zone Bass. Unfornuately the Zone (American & Mexican models) has been discontinued but what a prolific player man! You can get all kinds of sound and tone from this baby! Mine is the walnut model. I'd NEVER Sell this baby - ever! The '57 speaks for itself. I'm primarily a guitarist but when I pick up either bass I'm in another realm! Most of my guitars are Teles and Strats.

Everyone on here is giving you good advice, but at the end of the day you've got to try 'em out. Even two of the exact same model may not feel the same. When it comes down to it, it's just you and your bass alone, so find the one that feels right. A lot of people pick their instruments based partially on what other people will think. A "vintage" sounds cool, so does the American Standard, but if you don't like the way it feels in your hands, then who cares which model it is. I played a few of the exact Jazz I have and a bunch of the P-Bass I bought a month ago. I played the this P-Bass, loved it, tried a few others of the same model, and kept coming back to this one. I can't tell you how I always knew, but when I checked with the guy in the store, he told me it was always the same one that I picked. He even tried to trick me by switching where they were in the store, and I knew it wasn't the right one.

So play as many as you can. Then when you narrow it down to the model, play as many of them as you can. You'll feel the difference when you are playing "your bass".

Don't forget, in this economy there are going to be deals, and discounts every few months or so, otherwise no one is going to be buying.

Have fun!

Yeah I find between basses the necks help me decide a lot. And fenders generally have the Best necks for me. But my problem is none the music stores in town have these basses. But I want to play them.

Check pawn shops. I was walking down the street here in LA, and decided to walk into a pawn shop that I saw down the block. There was a Jazz inside and a ton of Amps and Cabinets. There was a guy in there looking at a Les Paul, and they were letting him play it through a few amps.

If you find a bass you like at a pawn shop make sure they will let you play it through an amp so you can hear if there is a problem with the electronics. Also see if they will let you return it if there is a problem with it. Let them know you are going to take it to a guitar shop to have a tech check it out after you buy it and you'll want to return it if they don't give it a thumbs up.

Unfortunately the Pawn shops are filling with equipment, but someone who knows what they are looking for can find a good deal.

That's why I order most of my basses from Sweetwater. My local stores never carry what I'm interested in, but Sweetwater does, and their sales reps will pull the bass for me and inspect it while I'm on the phone with them. They'll play it for me, being my hands, eyes and ears so to speak, and will email me pictures from any angle I ask for. If there is a problem with the bass, they tell me about it. (Once there was a Jazz bass I wanted but the pots had issues so the guy wouldn't sell it to me, made me wait until they got one that was perfect.) You don't get service like that at Guitar Center or Musician's Friend -- they just send you the box unopened from their warehouse with no prior inspection. Sweetwater does a full inspection and set up for free before they ship. And if for any reason you're not happy they have a full return policy. That's why I keep ordering from them, they make online ordering about as risk free as it can be and the next best thing to playing it myself before buying.
