I bought a New American Standard P-Bass three weeks ago. I love the bass, the maple neck was flamed, which is rare as it is not a standard on the bass. The tint on the neck was deeper and more yellowish than normal compare to others of the same model.

After three weeks the lacquer on the maple fretboard had a small crack on the first fret connecting to the nut going down. It's about 1/4 of an inch.

The crack looks deep, but the guitar store said that it's just on the lacquer. Nevertheless, they replaced my guitar with a new one, which is great, and so far it's good.

I'm wondering where the crack came from. Is it common? What can I do to prevent that or is it just a factory defect?

Can that happen when you adjust the truss rod?

Hard to say, especially hard without seeing it. Could have been caused by stress or temperature changes. Did you leave it in the car in frigid conditions or expose it to temperature extremes?

One of the features of the new American Standard is touted in their sales literature as, "a richer and deeper neck tint for a more elegant appearance." Compared to previous models it would appear darker. If it was a finish crack that is unusual as the Polyurethane clear-coats are usually pretty stable even in temperature extremes. I'm leaning toward some sort of stress.

Hi Brother Dave! Thanks for the insight. I only had the bass for 3 weeks and never had the chance to take it out yet. The temp in our place is stable, not too cold not too hot.

It's probably stress or something like you said. I'm glad to hear that polyurethane clear-coats are stable.

The one I have right now is good and I hope it stays that way. I love the guitar, the feel, weight, look and the sound.

First i agree that without seeing it, it's hard to diagnose..with that said..i had this happen once some yrs ago ( another brand ), it turned out to be an issue with the trussrod nut being bound up with glue..once i turned the rod, the finish cracked from stress. at least thats what happened on mine. as long as they replaced the bass, you are gold!
