After a few weeks of paying for this on layaway at guitar center, I finally brought this beast home yesterday. I chose it almost solely for the clearance price at guitar center, being under $400 and a pretty snazzy bass at that. It's supposed to be the backup for my American Deluxe Active Jazz Bass, not that it really needs a backup, buy you know G.A.S. and all. I got it to my practice space and plugged it into my Bassman 300 pro with the matching 8x10 and WOW. THis guy really thumps, really really really thumps. I'm getting bottom I've never heard or been able to get near with the J-Bass. So I think that my Jazz bass will make a pretty nice backup for my new 51 P.

I named it "The Banana Plank".

:P

Put some flatwounds on it and it will really thump!

Awesome! I paid a little more than you did for my 51 reissue ($650 as I recall) but still not much money compared to my MIA Fenders, yet it gets as much playing as any of my expensive Fenders or Rickenbackers do, it's just a wonderful bass IMO. The single coil pickup has a nice percussive snap to it thats a little brighter than what I get with my split coil P-basses, and the neck on this CIJ reissue is superb, nice rounded edges, frets are level, very comfortable to play.

Here's a question, would a 51 reissue sit well sound wise with my Blues/Rocks covers band? I love the look of them to bits, but can't afford to buy basses that won't get used!?

Thanks

Graeme

Absolutely. They are extremely popular with blues bassists because they have such a nice percussive thump. This aspect makes them great for classic rock too.

As has been explained to me, their tone is a byproduct of having a single coil pickup with just one pole piece under each string, creating a narrower magnetic field and thus more abrupt response to the plucked string. The Jazz Bass pickups are also single coil but have two pole under each string, making for a smoother, less percussive response.

If you are budget conscious, check ebay for used 51 reissues. I've seen a few there that look like they're in good shape.

I've been playing my '51 at rehearsals lately, preparing for a July 4 bash. It has a lot of "snap" and "thump," much more aggressive than the split-coil. Not to knock the later model, I love 'em both, but they are different beasts.

A friend borrowed the Classic '50s in February or so, and I just got it back (in fact, I started Friday's practice with the '51, finished with the '50s) so the distinctions are fresh in my mind. From a player's perspective, the contours on the body and the alder (vs ash) are both improvements from the '51: the later one is lighter and doesn't dig into my ribs.

And it's easier to play legato passages on the Classic '50s. But there's a place for thump.

These colors are ALL different. Fairly close but darker? Understatement. Another thing....what you can not see in these photos is that the original blonde is see through and you get hints of the grain. The butterscotch yellow is completely opaque. So it isn't like the original either.

I guess if you want the original you could just cough up the 25 grand.

I've never been a big sunburst fan either but preferred it over the yellow. The sunburst ones are harder to come by for some reason.

Yes, it looks that way in photos. The actual finish is translucent and the grain is easily visible.

I'll admit, I'm glad mine is the older, brighter yellow - a '96 MIJ.

Hey Dave, you can see the wood grain just fine in mine. Looks fantastic. But I've seen some that seem to have thicker finish than others.

Yes you can see the grain quite well. Funny but all the ones I've seen at the Guitar Center in Matthews NC look to be a different color entirely and you can't see any grain. I'll check again next time I'm over there. It could be they changed something.
