That is your opinion and you are entitled to it.

Thank God I found a sunburst one. I couldn't ever bring myself to buy one of those yellow ones.

I truly do like the 2-tome burst, and would like a '50s Classic P in that flavor.
However, a 2-tone burst isn't accurate on a '51RI and I wanted one as close as I could get to a original '51 without breaking the bank.
I wish my "mango" '51RI wasn't so dark, but it is and I love it.

You know that, I know that, people who read this forum thread will probably know that, a handful of gearheads know that...but the general public coming to see your band doesn't know that. I think the sunburst is prettier than the yellow and just plain looks nicer. Just my opinion.

I'm saving my quarters for a refinish by Gord Miller in Canada in NITRO SEE-THROUGH BLONDE just like the real 51. I might have him do the neck also....still thinking about whether or not to do the neck. I've seen his nitro blonde and it is STUNNINGLY original looking. This is going to happen the question is only when.

I'm one of those who think both colors are ugly. I have the banana yellow one, but I don't wish I had the sunburst, because the "butterscotch" shows up well under stage lights.

Maybe I'm just not particular about color: I have a fiesta red (pink/orange) Classic '50s that I love, not for the horrendous color, but for the sound and playability (to be fair, several people want to buy it from me, since -- in their minds -- it is such a gorgeous color). It's the same color (so I hear) as a factory '56 Ford Thunderbird finish, but I'm old enough to remember those and I didn't like it then, either.

Luckily, I can't hear paint.

There is a notable difference between poly and nitro, though. I never gave it much thought until I briefly owned an Epiphone Sheraton II finished in clear poly, followed immediately by the purchase of a 335 with nitro. For two finishes that look reasonably similar from 20' away, there's a world of difference in feel and look, when you're handling the instrument. I'd love to have my '51 refinished in real blonde, and while I was at it, I'd contour the body, too.

Unfortunately, I didn't get all that for the $600 I paid for it, new.

Banana??? I haven't heard it called THAT color before.
School Bus Yellow & Mango are quite common.

It's been said that the '51RIs were darker (I still say too dark)
on purpose to slightly resemble an aged '51 P.
Looking at photos in "The Fender Bass: An Illustrated History",
my bass looks close to an aged '51. Not spot on of course.

I like the butterscotch better on my Squier Tele though.

I think the ones from the 90s were the banana yellow. The more recent finish is the butterscotch, which I too think looks closer to aged blonde. The only bummer is the heavy polyurethane finish. Nitrocellulose would have been better.

Well, mine is an '06, but a friend calls it my "banana" bass. I don't care for the finish, but it looks fine under stage lights. And the poly is a little much, but, considering the increased cost of nitro, I can live with it.

After all, I bought it to play.

And, as I like to respond to inquirers, "the difference between mine and a real '51 is the finish, the Phillips-head screws, and about $15K."

It's still a great bass, whatever you call the color.

Yep. And personally I like having basses that don't look like everyone else's.

Here's a nice color comparison. From left to right is a real '51, a '54 and a '57:

And here's a good pic of the new butterscotch '51 reissue:

The new butterscotch is fairly close to the real deal but darker.

Q: The original 51 came with the bridge and pickup covers? But the reissue does not. If you wanted to add them, would you have to drill the body? And since the original has a finger rest, does that mean the originals pickguard had a space for it or two screwholes?

The covers and tug bar do not come with it but can be ordered aftermarket. Check ebay, I see them all the time there. But there is nothing pre-drilled so you'll have to do it yourself. Not hard to do, but just take your time. I think BrotherDave and/or I posted something here about that.
