The Jazz was originally the "Deluxe" model, with the off-set waist, dual pickups and narrower neck. But despite the Jazz bass' extra features the P-bass tone has kept it Fender's most popular bass. It sits well in virtually any mix.

Well there are those times you need to jump out of the mix though....with a SINGLE COIL 51 REISSUE!

I've never regretted selling a J-bass but I can think of 3 P-basses I'd like back.

AND TOMMY... I hope you aren't planning a career in graphic design!
Just kidding!

Yeah the single coil P-basses are awesome! I was looking at some real early and mid-50's Precisions last year but the price was a bit much for me. That's why the 51 reissue is so nice, you get the tone but on the cheap so you can play the hell out of it worry free!

This is the essence of the vintage 50's p-bass. With simple, vintage looks and punchy, warm tone, this p-bass is one of the best I've played. The 51 precision bass is great for any type of music, especially motown, pop and rock. Hopefully I will be able to get one of these soon, and I recomend this bass to anyone who is a vintage p-bass fan.

Hi everyone, when i ordered my 51 re-issue tobacco sunburst in (November 2008) it took about 3 1/2 weeks to come. Now......

1. CRAFTED IN JAPAN
2.MADE IN JAPAN

Mine is a 2008 model MADE IN JAPAN serial number.. (T and six ditgits)TXXXXXX and it was built in august 2008 (by a Fender source)

A friend bassplayer just bought one on Ebay and his was CRAFTED IN JAPAN and according to the serial number ( AXXXXXX ) A and 6 ditgits, it was built in 1997-1998.

There are major differences between his and mine that are noticeable and substantial.
First, his has a contour body, mine does not, the neck is not as bulky as mine and of course this makes his is a lot lighter than mine.

I have no idea why the differences and if anyone has any more information to share I would appreciate. Enjoy a pic of mine.

A contured body would mean it's NOT a '51 RI, more of a '54ish RI. Like the Sting model but no "Stinglay" on the fretboard. (12th fret is it?)

That's my opinion of course.

My '03 '51RI is CIJ.

As I understand it, "MIJ" is an instrument made in Japan to American plans, and "CIJ" is one designed in Japan (even though, in the case of the '51 RI, the basis is the same instrument).

The contouring means it's not a '51 -- could be a '54 or '55 RI. The contouring appeared around the time the Stratocaster, the first guitar with contouring, was released, which was 1954.

I have heard of people switching necks around. Putting a 51 RI neck on a Sting and moving the Sting neck to the 51 and then playing out with the Sting body. It has happened. I have seen two thusly swapped. I'm not saying this is what happened in this particular case, but certainly is one possibility. I've also considered doing it,but haven't and probably won't.

I've not seen any MIJ 51 Reissues. All I've seen are CIJ. That doesn't mean they don't exist, it just means I haven't seen them.

I'm suspecting the contoured body is a Sting body. I might be wrong but I'm suspecting it.

Also on the serial number, if Fender Japan follows the serial sequence that Fender lists on their CIJ page, which I have no reason to doubt they would do, I’ll quote:

CIJ Serial
Crafted in Japan O + 5 digits = 1997-2000
Crafted in Japan P + 5 digits = 1999-2002
Crafted in Japan Q + 5 digits = 2002-2004
Crafted in Japan R + 5 digits = 2004-2005

This listing hasn’t been updated since 2005! It should have been, but it hasn't. So one could follow the recent serial pattern & extrapolate that:
Crafted in Japan S + 5 digits 2005-2006
Crafted in Japan T + 5 digits 2006-2007

(EDIT)....OR...maybe this is it!
Crafted in Japan R + 5 digits = (continued) into 2006
Crafted in Japan S + 5 digits 2006-2007
Crafted in Japan T + 5 digits 2007-2008

Dave

Not sure if this helps or not:

1982: Fender Japan starts production with FujiGen Gakki having the manufacturing contract. The "Made in Japan" (MIJ) logo is used.

1984: CBS sells Fender to its current owners and while waiting for a new USA factory to begin production, Fender Japan models and leftover USA stock were mostly sold in the USA for a few years.

1992: The first "Crafted in Japan" (CIJ) models start appearing due to Dyna Gakki taking over some of the manufacturing while FujiGen Gakki were expanding their operations.

1996/1997: "Crafted in Japan" (CIJ) is used instead of "Made in Japan" (MIJ) because Tōkai and Dyna Gakki take over the manufacturing contract from FujiGen Gakki.

"Made in Japan" is used on some current Fender Japan models (2007) instead of "Crafted in Japan".

Yer buddy's bass may have had a neck/body swap as pointed out earlier.
Or it was a Japan issue of some sort, not the regular CIJ '51RI issue.

Here's a '52 RI (really???) MIJ on eBay.
Made in Japan in 1990-91

Well the serial number when processed through the Fender Guitar Dater Project database produces:
Your guitar was made at the
Fuji-gen Plant (for Fender Japan), Japan
in the Year(s): 1990 - 1991

This is a very interesting guitar considering the '51 RI was not introduced in the USA until January 2003!

It looks almost precisely the same as mine with a few exceptions. The headstock Decal on mine has gold line running around the script lettering and the decal placement is slightly different. This '52 has what looks to be a plastic two-screw finger rest installed. I’m pretty sure that wasn’t original.

This would have to be the forerunner of today's '51 Reissue. It is even made in the very same plant as today's '51 RI!

This guitar is marked MIJ instead of CIJ which probably means it was initially sold in Japan. How it got to the USA is a mystery of course.

I'm guessing these would have been called a '52 RI as Fender wanted to reserve the 51 RI for the USA market. They also may have called it a '52 since sunburst wasn't available on the '51's since they all were done in see-through blonde. I’ve never seen one of these in person but have heard of them before. Fuji-Gen also did some in paisley finish and in a “flower power” finish sometimes called “Fender Flower Basses.”

$750 opening price seems a little high, but would definitely be more worth it if there weren’t 3,000 plus ’51 RI’s produced per year! This instrument is definitely collectible in my view. I’d love to have it. If I had the extra money I’d bid on it. It may not be rare in Japan, but in the USA it is pretty unusual to see one. I think it is probably worth at least $800 if for nothing else than being the prototypical Japanese early 50’s reissue that led to the ’51 Reissue.

I think Fender Japan was making all sorts of RIs etc., before they ever hit the states. I'm for sure NO expert! :?

2-tone didn't come out until '54, but that didn't stop 'em from making it a choice on the newer '51RIs.

Good eye on the thumbrest, I missed that!

I'm still confused on the whole Fender Japan thing! :?

I'm guessing that the '03 and newer RIs were CIJ and meant to be sold in the USA.
Older models were sold in Japan or for sale in the USA by special order.
Beats me!

There's nothing to sorting out the Fender Japan thing really compared to trying to figure out the Ibanez Korea thing where I eventually tracked down that CORT made most of them.

I do not think this 52 Bass was available even on special order in the USA. Neither were the paisley or Flower models. The same plant that made these 52 MIJ's and the 51 CIJ's (FUJI GEN) also makes the G&L TRIBUTE models by the way. These guys have got it going on and you have to hand it to them for making a whole bunch of great basses of all types no matter how hard it is to sort out. They have their own line of basses too and they are supposed to be really, really nice but I've never actually SEEN one in person.

Here's another '51RI with a '99 serial number.
