I hope so too! Everyone should try one. It is a real time machine. As pointed out used ones are almost always on eBay. The problem is finding a good one in an online auction. Sometimes you get lucky in the auctions, while other times you wind up buying someone else's problems.

While the real '51's were not issued in sunburst, the reissues in sunburst look great. The necks are remarkable and easy to play. I also like the STING version a lot. They are very similar instruments except for the Sting's body contouring and that signature block inlay on the 12th fret. I've never liked that inlay much. I'd like to take a '51 RI neck and put it on the Sting body. That would be sweet! Expensive...but sweet!

Judging by all the '51 RI's popping up on EBAY Fender has been selling lots of them. As long as they sell lots of them they will keep making them. The recent price increase was really substantial and may have some immediate negative impact on sales overall. I'm glad I got mine over a year ago bypassing the last two increases. I will never EVER sell my '51 RI.

Token photo of my '03 '51RI. I got a sweet deal from Guitar Trader. Grand total of $488. $50 Fender rebate that day, free shipping, no CA sales tax, and they threw in a free set of flats.
I actually called them and said I think they messed up with the sales tax. They said "No biggie!".

I bought this bass without playing one previously, and I bought my '50s Classic P and a MIM Standard P off eBay and I'm very happy with them. Either I'm very lucky or not very picky.

Love that bass! I've got a butterscotch too with the chrome covers. Beauty! I agree with everything Dave said about playability -- fantastic tone and neck.

I've had a butterscotch one for about 4 years. Over that time I've swapped the pickup for a Basslines Quarter Pound single coil, changed to Thomastik-Infeld Jazz Flats, traded the two-saddle bridge for one off an American Deluxe, and, most recently, lost the stamped metal output cup for a machined Electrosocket from Stewart-McDonald.

It's the thump king, and every change I have made has simply enhanced its feel, sound and playability. I love the retro look, and I can live with the slab body. I'm doing a certain amount of Blind Willie McTell with a couple of friends, and it really fits in. When I sold off all the excess instruments I've accumulated over the years, the three Precisions (this one, a Classic '50s, and a fretless) were the only ones left standing.

Love it. It's all personality and thump.

+1 on the Electrosocket - about time Fender killed off the vintage jack cup on all telecaster based models.

My 51 is a '96, so it's a blonde rather than butterscotch. Also fully equipped with covers and tug bar. All elese is stock. Rotobass 45s rounds. Best bass I have.

I did some horse trading last year and got rid of a bunch of overweight amps and gear and replaced everything with lighter weight stuff (along the way I acquired a Jazzmaster Ultralight -- terrific guitar amp). Anyhow, my Ampegs went out the door, replaced by a Hartke HA2500 + 115TP rig for bass. I'm in the fortunate position that I can use a friend's Genz Benz Shuttle 6.0 210T when i have a serious gig on bass.

So I mostly use the Hartke for learning songs and playing at pickup open mics and whatnot, and I haven't minded that it sounds a little tubby with my split-coil P, since I got it for zero cash outlay.

The other day I plugged the '51 into it, and damn! That single coil really thumps through the fifteen. What a cool bass. I'm in love all over again.

I can promise you that it will be out for a long time. First off it makes a $@! load of sales, and second its fender's only way of having the original eletric bass with out buying well... the original. Fender is a big company but they actually have people that have hearts running it, those people care about us the buyers (although it may not seem so with the price hikes) and they care about their history.

I have a question

The original 51's, what other colors did they come in, other than just butterscotch blond and tobacco sunburst? Damn those are looking really keen to me!

Wow I don't think I've ever put that much heart in a post before!

According to the material I've read, the early Ps were only in blonde; in around '54-5 they added two-color sunburst (which eventually led to using alder for the body, because the finish worked better on it than on ash). Custom colors were available, but I've seen a picture of only one red '55 (purportedly made for a NAMM show). Regularly available colors came along in '58 (the first was fiesta red, mixed to George Fullerton's taste) after the introduction of the second-generation P in July '57.

The first instrument sprayed with fiesta red was a '57 Fender Jazzmaster guitar.

I'd love a "real" blonde '51, but the banana yellow "butterscotch" glows under stage lights.

Are you talkin' about the "original" original '51s?

One flavor only ....... butterscotch. Not sure what the color was called back then. Was it blonde?
2-tone burst came out in '54.

EDITED TO ADD:

I just saw that lpdeluxe beat me to the punch!

Yeah, a few folks on my *ahem* other forum, don't like the Butterscotch .... 'Mango' I call it, replacing 'School Bus Yellow'.
Myself, I like the Butterscotch, although I do wish it was a bit lighter. And I wanted a bass as close as an original '51 I could get. (On MY budget!) :D

It's an okay color but the tobacco sunburst is ulgy. Cause it has the through body bridge I would slap a badassIII bridge on it, but only if the bridge cover fit over it. And mabey the basslines (duncan) QP pup.

my plan is to but the mike dirnt and the 51 at the same time switch the necks and they both look custom
