A friend of mine and I both bought new Amercian P Bass Standards May of 08. 2 Different stores and one had to be ordered. They both do the same thing. After playing fo a while they seem to build up static or something as they get very crackly sounding. Not hiss , but cracking up sound. He took his back and the dealer got him a new one and it has been fine since. At first we thought it was cables and or the amp so in my case I tried many different cables and 3 different amp heads. Any idea as to what it could be?

Your bass may be trying to enter another dimension....Welcome to...the Twilight Zone.

Sorry, I'll stop joking because I know to you it isn't one bit funny.

Well, I'm totally stumped! This is a bizarre report for sure. Two different '08 USA Standards with the exact same cracking issue.

Questions.
1. Is yours doing this everywhere? Can you duplicate it for example at the dealer so you can exchange it? (If yes, I'd exchange it like your friend.)
2. Does it come in random bursts as a total surprise or is it fairly predictable.
3. Are you using any pedals or running through any electronic tuners?
4. Once it starts what stops it?
5. When using the identical setup, and switching to playing a different passive bass, does it ever happen.
6. Is there any noise in addition to the crackling like a high pitched whine, buzz, beep, hum, voices that sound like ducks or a metalic click?
7. Is it more likely at one time of the day than another or does it happen day and night?
8. If you aren't playing and just let the bass sit on a stand with the amp cranked, will it do it if you let it sit long enough untouched?
9. When it happens does the musical output completely cease?

You need to rule out RFI, satellite and microwave uplinks, dirty power, neon lights and other common sources of nasty interference. When you can rule everything out and duplicate it predictably in several different amp setups at multiple locations miles apart, then you have to think it is a problem with the bass.

Good luck, Dave
