I own and have played, almost exclusively, a 71 P bass since it was new. My question is, there are a couple of extra predrilled holes (I had assumed for strap buttons) on the back that I have never used and noticed that other pre's do not seem to have this option. The original paint still shows the sunburst pattern around the screw holes location indicating it came from the factory this way. I am the second owner, the original owner, a close relative, never required anywork done to it as it was new and rarely played, when I bought it from him around 1974 or 75 for 350 bucks. I am confident it has never been refinished since it's birth. Am I missing something? I have pics.

Ok Buddy no worries, I am newbie too and my english is not the best I'm a Tico (Costarican) but let me explain you how to post pics:

1. You have to find a host page for the picture (Imageshack.com, picoodle.com, or another one)
2. Upload your picture to the chosen host page.
3. That page will display an html code, which is a long code with letters signs and numbers.
4. Copy that code (ctrl+c) and paste it to your message in this forum (ctrl+v).
5. you will see the picture once you submit your comment.

Hope this helps.

Buddy I think those are homemade holes, I am not sure but it looks like. Maybe someone else can bring more experience to this topic. it is interesting the fact that the sunburst around the holes doesnt look like it was homemade....

The screw on the first picture is the one for calibrating the arm of the bass, so that one is not recommended to touch it unless you have the expertise to do it. Probably you know more than me.... You put that picture to show the date right?

Hope this helps...

**Experts please bring some of your knowledge....**

Yes, I showed the neck stamp to simply show the date. I know this guitar has not been modified and that the sunburst paintjob is original. Other than not owning it for the first couple of years it existed, I purchased it from a relative when we were much younger when he decided he wanted to be the keyboard player, I have played it regularly since 1974. It was mint when I bought it and other than having it refretted once, the pots changed, and a new bridge, the rest is original. The years of enjoyment generated by my trusty old precision is definately illustrated by the many nics and bruises it has taken. As I reach the final years of my music career I have no intention of doing anything with it other than to continue to play it and take it where ever it takes me. I have always been intrigued by the extra strap button holes (if that is what they are) and thought I would ask. I remember, maybe 25 years ago or more, moving the strap buttons to those locations but found it very unfamiliar and moved them back. It also did not fit in the case very well. I still believe they are original but I suppose the originail retailer could have 'modified it' possibly for a potential customer or whatever. Who would do that to a new guitar!! Thanks for the help on posting pics!!!!

The extra strap button holes are not original to your bass. Someone added those holes and that sometimes happens with Fender basses or any bass for that matter.

Just because the finish is reletively intact around the holes doesn't mean that they were original to the bass. It is very easy to take a drill and move the strap buttons just like it is very easy to move a finger rest.

People did all kinds of stuff to their Fender basses. Remember back in the 70's it was just a bass guitar that sold for less than 300 bucks new!

If I were you I would plug the extra holes because they just let moisture into the bass body but that's just my opinon.

I thought that also but that does not explain the sunburst paint around the rear most hole (under the original laquer). I undertsnd what you are saying and believe that to be true of the upper holes. I obviously have never had any finish restoration done to it and it certainly showed no appearance of any modification when I purchased it from the original owner, who is family. It was still 'new' when I purchased it from him. that would be about 1974. To our knowledge that hole with the sunburst around it was there when he bought it. I guess I may never know who did that deed or why! Thanks for replying. It is greatly appreciated!! Damn, I paid too much for it!

Sunburst paint over a hole?
I think you are referring to the dowel marks left by the tooling fender used when they carved the bodies on the old style pin routers.
All older Fender basses have mounting holes that were used in the factory.
There are two on the rear of every Fender body on a center line and there are two on every Fender neck.
These holes are filled with a dowel that appears as a brown dot under the finish and they have nothing to do with strap buttons.

Just use them as a pedigree marker for you bass.

So somewhere, at sometime this instrument was used outdoors and Woody Woodpecker gave it a once over. After tasting the sunburst he decided he preferred a natural finish.

Woodpecker or not, it is a near certainty it didn't come from the factory with all those holes. Regards, Dave

It looks like a cigarette burn, or a third nipple.

None of the visible holes on your bass came from the factory. Those are all examples of bad ideas when applied to Fender basses. Trust me folks, there is no better place for the strap buttons then where they were placed by the factory. The dowel holes that I am talking about are not visible in any of your pictures.
