hey, wonder if you could all lend your expertise in a problem i have or rather my bro

he bought a fender precision bass on the net, from china and it arrived the other day and to be honest a few things about it have made me wonder if it is a fake, and seeing as my own strat is a wonderful guitar these little things make me think it could never be a proper fender, its rather shoddy workmanship esp at the top of the neck

hes not paid any money yet as the website its done through requires confirmation from buyer before paying the seller so he would like to double check before doing anything else

firstly the bass didn't come with any fender package, like booklet, alan keys etc like my mexican strat did when bought new (not from the same place) just a stick on it saying genuine fender and telling u which strings were on it

Image

second thing is the Fender Precision Bass writing on it looks well misaligned in my eyes like someone has stuck it on somehow badly

Image

and thirdly there is a crack and little gaping hole on one side of the neck at the plastic part at the top of the neck that the strings sit in (excuse my terrible technical grammar, u can't really see it in the pick but u can see the white plastic bit which the strings sit in and its right at the bottom of that

Image

all the strings except the top one work fine when plugged in but the top string is dead when plugged into an amp compared to the rest and makes a rattling noise when plugged in

sorry to go on so long but wanted to make sure i covered everything, if anyone can help out that'd be great i was thinking of emailing fender themselves incase it is a fake but wanted some second opinions on it first

thanks

bob

I call fake.

Especially see as it's from china, copyright infringement is rife there.

The Decal just doesn't look right. It's not in the right place and the Kerning (letter spacing) is way off - is there a serial number on it anywhere?

Whats in the neck pocket? (the bit where the neck slots into the body)

There's no lining around the truss rod hole either which is un fender like.

All in all, keep it, don't pay and tell fender where/who you got it from to confirm. Hopefully they can crak down on the b******s who do these counterfeits, assuming this is one.

hey man theres no serial number on it either that was another thing i meant to say as the serial number on my strat is on the back of the neck

not sure what you mean by whats in the neck slot but the metal piece that holds the neck on (excuse my terrible tech grammar again ) does not have a sellophane covering on it like my guitar did when bought new

i've messaged the comp which it was bought through, kinda like an ebay company its dhgate.com telling them i believe its fake and have contacted fender and i do not want to finalize payment with the seller so i shall see what they say

any other ppls opinions on it also would be great

cheers

bob

By the neck pocket I mean the bloody great hole in the body where the neck sticks in to :D you have to take the neck off though. Probably not much point though, I think the evidence is stacking up against it anyway :)

edit: having had a look on that site...oh my god. Real Fender Precision it is yes now you buy!!

Dodgy... :/

As far as that 5er in the ad, that's a P style Body, with J style pups, and what looks like a Turser P copy neck, or something like it...that 5 string is fake. The other one may be put together with some squier parts, maybe even a Fender part or two, but it definitely does not look legit to me.

1. The headstock decal is obviously, completely, hideously wrong.

2. The sticker on the pickguard advertises "Super Bullets." That sticker is for a six-string guitar. Fender doesn't make "Super Bullets" for bass.

3. it shouldn't have that truss rod adjustment slot in the peghead.

4. It's from China.

A complete fake.

It's a TOTAL fake. FAKEFAKEFAKE ALERT

:!:

Note that you can't get P basses from china unless they are squier. And squiers don't even come in that color.

Look at Jim's points.

Also, the 5 string in the site is a COMPLETE FAKE.

The decal says Fender (and then under it) Precisionbass

The pickups are an OLP style jazz pickup, yet the guard is P style.

and the neck is probably a Crestwood or JT.

Definitely a fake. For one, where is the serial number? The other, the "crack" that you described to me looks like under the nut (the white part), so that is suspicious. And as far as the "super bullets"..totally not for the Fender Bass. Looks a lot like many other copies I used to see in Korea with Fender P-body styles but with only cheap Fender decals.

I say fake as well. Superbullets are electric guitar strings, those stickers are usually on the back of a strat, on the tremolo guard. And the "precision" is not in the right place, it should contour with the neck or the "fender" should be alittle higher and the "precision" should be placed under it.

First the decal looks odd because its a lefty to begin with(lefty basses had diff decal location)but the serial is bootleg and I have seen this print type on other fakes, the neck is'nt of the proper finish on the back, the tuners look like brand-new Fender script type found for 50.00 on the net,the bridge has incorrect screw hole pattern(2 two many).
It looks like someone took a whole bunch of different bass parts that look Fender-ISH and put them together actually quit well(its just mis-represented but not made poorly)and used odd angles to make it hard to tell maybe yes or no,it was photo'd like that purposefully, there's some decent parts there but its NOT a 77 Fender p-bass by any stretch of the imagination, how much was it ? it may play or sound decent, its not made horribly like I mentioned earlier,is fake Fender but may be OK for WHATEVER it may really be.
