Occasionally I read that the Hot Rod P bass (A passive P with a split coil P pup and a single coil J pup) that was issued in the late 90's had a control problem. Something to do with how the 2 pups interact when you mix the gain and/or tone from both of them.
Fender was supposed to have issued a "fix" for this or maybe it was just common knowledge at repair shops how to do the "fix". I can't seem to find out much more.

Adding to the confusion, around 2000 Fender officially changed the model name from the "Hot Rod" P to the "Hot Rodded" P. I've never seen any detailed info about what the difference was and whether the newer version included the fix to the control problem, if there was one.

Can someone please elaborate on the "problem" and how to tell if it is there or not? I have a 99 Hot Rod (Corona S/N N94xxx).

What I notice is that if I have the P pup turned all the way up, turning up the J pup does not increase the volume, instead it just changes the overall tone to hotter mids and a little less low end. It could be perceived as lowering the volume slightly but I assume it's the blending of the tonal characteristics of the 2 pups that causes this. It's not what I would expect to happen but once understood, the controls are still usable.

Going the other way if I start with the J pup all the way up, adding in the P pup does change tone and increase volume since the P Pup brings in more low end.

So is this the "problem"? and if so, what was the "fix" ? Any info appreciated.

Thanks

That link MIGHT help you. Compare it to your current wiring. Dave
