Hi folks,

I just scored an '83 Elite II (cherry burst/maple!). It needs a bit of work, but hey...I got a good deal. Hopefully I can fully restore it.

Issue #1 is the fine adjustment tuning screws on the bridge are missing. Does anyone know what thread size they are so I can purchase thumb screw replacements?

TIA,

T.

Here are pics from the previous owner. The bass had to go straight to the shop; the electronics were making the most god-awful noise I ever heard (not 60 cycle hum). I hope it is just a matter of fixing/replacing a very lose jack...I don't know if those unique PUPs and TBX circuitry can be serviced now some 26 years after production.

I need to remove the de-tuner and replace it with a period-correct tuner as well.

I've got that same bass but in black. Why do you want the tuning screws anyway? I've got them still and the're a pain to mess with, just use your headstock tuners and enjoy.

Mastermold,

I realize that the screw are just about useless. I'd like to have them, however, in case I want to sell the bass at some point.

Would you be interested in selling me your set?

I won't sell mine only because I want to keep the bass intact (I've got sentimental attachment to it, it was my first new bass. I bought it new back in 1985 and am the original owner.) But you're right, they are useless for the most part. A lot of guys would take them off, which is why so many don't have them anymore.

tommygunn,

I'd rather not say how much I paid in a public forum, sorry. As for if I want to sell it....it comes back from the shop tomorrow. I will evaluate it and make a decision in the near future.

just wanted to share with you (I'm new here) my lovely Fender Precision Elite II bass from 1983. Purchased 2nd hand ($1200) with some really nice mods (badass II bridge, pickup selectors etc...)

[quote="Big-T"]Mastermold,

Telling how much you paid in a Fender forum really has NO positive nor negative sway on the re-sale price,I hate to tell you but they are only selling for 1000.00$ Mint(general, options will add or detract a few hundred either way)your not dealing with a 62 Jazzbass all original, its a last few yrs of CBS's ruining of the Fender name, and arguably known for not being the pinnacle of the Fender quality.
I am sure there's gonna be some nay-sayer's about the comment pertaining to its quality and I am aware of the number of great basses from that era,but the ratio of great to average basses from that time is'nt in Fenders favor, I am not downing anyone's favorite bass they may have had and myself also have had both good and bad exp with both types so its not a dig on your bass just about the era its from.
The small screws are tuff to find, being a bass tech I have been asked numerous times to replace them on a bass I was working on and aside from a couple of E-Bay auctions at a inflated price I have'nt had the luck finding them that I have had with other parts from that short time those basses were made.
Goodluck

the thread size for the fine-tuning knobs is 3mm coarse. I am missing a gold knob on my '83 Elite II. Not only is it impossible to find anything gold that doesn't look like it was left in a basement of a house that burned to the ground, it's hard to find a gold hex screw that size. There is a chrome bridge for sale @ guitarcheology. Does anyone know who does the 'gold' plating? I too hate the fact that I have one missing. It's such a rare and nice instrument. Want it to be 100% original, but I started out looking for a Badass bridge to fit it and ended up here. Will provide photos if anyone is interested.

Not sure where you see MINT IIs selling for that price, but around here ones in excellent condition are selling for $1500 and near mints closer to $1700 - which is almost full value. VGM 2014 Price Guide puts them at $1500-$1900.

Affprod's valuation is valid for most of the USA even here in the Carolinas. $1000 would be one that had been modified maybe.
