I just bought a 1977 black pickguard to replace the non original guard I had. When I got it, it did not have holes for the thumb rest, pups cover or center body hole and it did not have the truss notch. It does have a serial tag on the back with the numbers S760xxx which I assume would date it to 1977. It looks legit but I just a little confused as I have only seen guards from this year with all the holes. Any help would be great.

A picture could help. I'm sure all the P pickguards 'til 1979 at least do have the 2 thumbrest holes, the central hole (for avoiding pickguard bending) and 2 holes for the p-u cover (mine do). Later they started makin' P without thumbrest and p-u cover, but the central hole still remained ('til 1983).

A genuine 1977 Precision pickguard should have all of the mentioned holes.
There are a lot of reproduction pickguards in circulation and it would not be difficult to transfer the serial number sticker although I thought that the serial number sticker should be on the neck or body in the neck pocket.

I hope you didn't pay big bucks for the guard as it is probably a reproduction guard.
