What about the humble 50's MIM precision? Best of both models with cool colors. Too bad they aren't nitro finish. I love mine. Sounds like an American std. and is built better than the HWY1, IMO. Here's mine:

YEP that is a nice one. I'm a sucker for Fiesta Red.

So the finish is the only thing done in Mexico, right? Otherwise how could they stamp them "Made In America".

Yes. Just the finishing. Fender is only doing nitro in Mexico now.

I was actually shopping both a few months back after selling my 62 P Bass. Loved the HWY 1, tone was great, bridge was sweet. But the Am Standard is a better instrument. At the time of my purchase the price difference between the them was about 135.00. No brainer... Am Standard. Plus... Am Standard comes with hardshell case... HWY 1/ gig bag.

Thanks for the welcome. I've been a Ric dihard for the last 7 years and decided to look into a P Bass. I've never owned one, or a bass with the pup configuration. Found a 2007 NOS HW1 for $675 in a local shop thursday and I can't stop playing it! It took me 15 years worth of playing to come full circle and find that the first is the best for me. :D

MM, Well actually that one is a second generation. To really get to the "FIRST" you have to play a 1951 or at least a 51 Reissue! 8)

True, but I prefer the split pup. Here's a pic of my first P-Bass.

Those are really hot. Love the fiesta red ones and the honey blonde! If the economy was better I'd get one of each.

Well I have had 4 Fender P bass's and loved every one. My newest is my Highway one in 3 colour Sunburst...I played it about 5 or 6 times before I bought it..My main bass up till now was a 6Oth anniversary mim P bass in blizzard pearl...I'm very picky about my gear..And the Highway one is the best bass to date for me.
