I bought a pick-up cover to install on my 51 Precision Bass Reissue and it does not center over the pick-up without part of the base of the cover sticking underneath the pickguard. Is that normal? Has anyone run into the same thing? Installing the bridge cover was a snap.

It's currently normal, but not correct. Fender even got the CS 55 Time Machine wrong. The re-issue pickguard was not conceived as going to have covers, so they apparently never bothered to get it right...I've had to modify the pickguard on mine slightly to make it fit properly. No biggie, but you have to do it carefully.

Yeah I ended up installing mine off-center with the pickup but centered on the pickguard where it meets the route space because the pickguard is also just slightly to the left. I did this because to center it on the pickup made it off-center with the pickguard, and that's the part you actually see (you don't see the pickup once it's covered).

It's a little bit of a pain but as Telebass says there's not much else you can do since the pickguard doesn't let you do otherwise. The good news is once it's on there it looks fine.

Thanks, Telebass. That confirmed what I thought. Much appreciated.[/quote]

Thanks, Mastermold. I hate that it's like that, but I think I'll follow your suggestion.

Glad to help. Post some pics when you're done.

Realizing that this thread is, like, 6 years old, I just ran into the exact same issue--I got a pickup cover to install on my '51 reissue P bass, and discovered that it doesn't actually fit. Which is a drag, but not a giant problem or anything. I imagine that by "modify the pickguard", you likely mean, "carefully dremel the plastic away to make the pickup cover fit", correct? And as such, probably more of a hassle than being out the $15.00 I spent on the pickup cover?

Exactly, a Dremel will do it. You don't have to do much to it, just a little. Go slow and finish with some light sandpaper. I'm of the opinion that the pickup cover belongs on there to protect the pickup. They are sort of fragile and don't like being used for a thumb rest for long. It shouldn't take more than ten minutes. 3 minutes to remove it, 3 minutes with the Dremel, 1 minute with the sandpaper and 3 minutes to reinstall. Done. Possibly the best mod to do on a 51 RI. Second best mod is a Duncan SCPB3 pickup.
