I cant find any other like it, is this some kind of special edition. On the headstock it says Precision Bass Special. Its made in the U.S.A, and it also says california series. Its black with a black pick guard, and has passive pick-ups. It has a long one then two little ones( pick ups that is). I tried looking for it online but all i find is either one with active pick-ups but its a deluxe not a special or the aerodyne which also has active pick ups. It also only has three knobs instead of four cause its passive. Can some one please help me. I cant find any other like it, or im just not looking right.ImageImageImage

I just spent a bit of time searching, to no avail. If there is an answer to the question, I feel confident you'll get it here, good luck.

This is a California Series bass which is the father of the current "HIGHWAY 1" series. Both are have decals that say "MADE IN USA" which is sort of a half truth since both series went through at least part of the production process at Fender's Ensenada, Mexico plant but are set up and final inspected in the USA. On the California Series bass that you have the body, neck, electronics and most hardware are USA made. The finish on California series instruments was done at Ensenada. The process went pretty well and these were an excellent seller so Fender brought the line back later as the Highway 1 series that is still currently available. The road from Corona to Ensenada is Highway 1, hence the name for the current series that uses the same process. For someone that can't afford a real USA bass the California series and Highway 1 series give you some of the benefits of a 100% USA bass, but they are not quite the same.

As I recall the California series ran for two years from 1997 to 1998 and serial numbers on these instruments began AMXN followed by 6 digits. In this serial format: A = America, MX = Mexico, N=90 and the very next digit would be a 7 for 1997 serials and 8 for 1998 serials.

I also recall seeing photos of truckloads of the bodies and necks going down Highway 1 in an advertisement, or maybe it was an article in Frontline magazine. At any rate there looked to be hundreds of bodies per truck. It was quite impressive especially on the return trip!
