What do you folks concider a good string height/action for a p bass? When I first got my Amer. Stnd., the action was perfect, now it seems a bit high and I was thinking of getting reset. I've gotten spoiled for low action after playing my Charvel San Dimas for 20+ years.

I keep mine set as low as I can without getting clanking when I start to dig in too heavy. Not as low as I like though.

Here's some reference on set-ups FYI:

I have an Amer. Stnd. with the new high mass bridge. I wasn't sure if I need relief in the neck for lowering the action.

Also, does anyone know what strings came on my 2008 Amer. Stand.?

According to the spec sheet for an American Standard Bass, the strings are supposed to be:
Super Bass 8250M NPS, p/n 073-8250-006,
Gauges: .045, .065, .085, .110TW (Taperwound E)

However, that is the same string specified on a bass I bought about two years ago and the E string was not "Taperwound" as was listed on the spec sheet.

So, if it had the Taperwound E it was a set of 8250M's. It it wasn't Taperwound, you'd have to show the original strings to an expert.

If you had a low action before and it's good, then you should be able to get it back to that again. Usually stores will give you a free set up within one year of purchase, may you have that deal too.

Find out what strings you really like and then put fresh ones when you get it set up. As you probably know, you need to change set up when you change strings...usually.

The neck probably moved a bit or something. I like low action too. Fender has specifications like the info sent to you above, but if you want low you can go lower, but your playing will be different as you want to avoid the buzzing.

I wouldn't recommend setting it up yourself if you don't know how.

I play fingerstyle with flatwounds so my action is very low. Straighten the neck, drop the saddles and jam!

I have heard the diadarrio's are good also, but haven't tried them...what kind of high tension did you get? does it affect the entonation?

I bought it from MusiciansFriend. Anyone know of a good setup person in the Twin City area? I hate high action to be honest. I have a set of DR Colors I want to get put on, so I'll have it done then. GC doesn't have set up people here I guess.

I have the same problem. The strings that came on the bass were tapered on the E and A strings. The only part of the string going over the saddle was the small, thin core. I added EB 2806 Flats and the action is way too high. The tapering of the strings made a big difference. Right now I have a slight concave bow in the neck and the E saddle is bottomed out and it's still too high, higher than my other Precision which is a 2000, with the same 2806 flats on it. I don't know if the guys at Guitar Center can set up a bass or not...I need to find someone though. I know what will happen if I tie into it. At least it's playable now. :?

I took the bass back into Guitar Center and a guy that actually knows how to set up a bass tweaked the truss rod. It brought the neck up a bit and the action is nice. I played it at a jam session Sunday and it felt great. Thanks.
