As strange as it sounds Glen Matlock and Chris Hillman. Both were innovators and solid musicians. Matlock virtually invented a new style of music and Hillman was responsible for, per those who make The Byrds a study, at least three. When I began bass in 1968 Hillman is who I listened to and still credit with the style I’ve used over the years.

I really like Flea and John Frusciante from the Red Hot Chili Peppers. In fact I have some GHS signature Flea strings on my Fender Precision at the moment.

Well I'll start with another quote:

"Well, there's thirteen hundred and fifty two
Guitar pickers in Nashville
And they can pick more notes than the number of ants
On a Tennessee anthill
Yeah, there's thirteen hundred and fifty two
Guitar cases in Nashville
And any one that unpacks his guitar could play
Twice as better than I will..." (John Sebastian)

+1 on Duck Dunn there Wade. I'd add Carol Kaye and James Jamerson as favorites. Ray Brown was pretty good on the string bass. It is dang near impossible to pick only one.

On 6 string it is even harder. Don Felder would be way up there and so would Eric Clapton, Carlos Santana and Jimi Hendrix. Because they had trendsetting acoustic and electric work I would have to add Chet Atkins and Glen Campbell. The Brazilian duo of Los Indios Tabajaras was the most technically stunning guitar act I ever saw, so if you thought only an electric guitar could melt your face, you are wrong. Jose Feliciano is STILL amazing, so if you ever get a chance to see him live don't miss it because he can really play. A player named Leo Kottke is a really innovative stylist whose technique is constantly evolving yet he always plays with precise power. My jazz faves are Wes Montgomery and Earl Klugh.

Not quite 1352 guitar pickers...but way more than one.
