Probably should mention that R&R Hall of Famer James Jamerson was once asked about tone. He talked about the Labella 760's and also mentioned that he left his covers on while most other players of the day were removing them and that, "Fender put them there for a reason." He claimed the Funk Machine bass sounded different without them. He used the pickup cover as a finger rest for his third and pinkie finger.

I think on the first generation models with the single coil pickup (like the '51 reissue) a pickup cover helps protect the pickup from damage more than anything else. You should never use these first generation pickups as a thumb rest because if you put too much pressure on it you can literally pull the pickup apart. I've seen several of these pups broken. Usually by someone used to using the pickup on a second generation bass as a thumb rest. I also think it helps shield these sensitive single coil pups from interference. I have two first generation style basses and they both have covers.

The question sometimes comes up about grounding the covers. I've read that the pickup cover on the earliest real 1951 P-basses had a ground wire that ran to one of cover screws, but was quickly eliminated as unnecessary since it made no difference at all.

I prefer playing these older single coil designs myself. They just have such powerful upper mids, the beefy necks suit me fine and the controls are simple but effective. However, the pickups are more fragile than on the second generation basses.
