I had to make a minor truss rod adjustment on my American Standard Precision bass, approx 1/4 turn. I applied a little tension on the headstock to assist the truss rod in straightening the neck (I saw a repair tech do this at an authorized Fender dealer and was told this was a common practice after adjusting the truss rod to straighten the neck) and I heard what I can best describe as a creaking maybe crackling sound a couple of times while I applied very little pressure on the headstock. Any idea what caused this? Is this common practice to apply a little bit of pressure on the headstock to help straighten the neck after a truss rod adjustment?

Sorry, I really do not have a pic to post to illustrate. All I can say is I applied a little pressure to the headstock to help straighten the neck as I was told and have read on some articles on truss rod adjustment and I heard a little bit of creaking/cracking type noise as I applied a little pressure on the headstock.

I had that happen to me before... It really did it on a G&L tribute I use to have. It freaked me out too... If it was just a little bit of cracking it's fine... The only thing that I could figure out that made the noise was were the frets were...and the clear coat that is put on the neck.

Aside from purely adjusting the allen wrench for the Truss Rod, applying pressure to the headstock may be a good practice too (since you seen an authorized tech do it). The Fender Truss Rods, from my experience, seem to be very tight -- almost have a glue or setting substance inside - as compared to my ESP Truss Rod, which is e-a-s-y to turn.

I think the sounds of 'creaking' would be normal ... a 1/4 turn would be nothing to worry about in my opinion. Mine creaks from the Truss Rod itself in contact with the wood neck inside ... After the setting, did you check the height with a capo and a 6in ruler?

Stratocaster Setup Procedure

Entirely up to you if you want to have a look at the above procedure that I made up ... if it plays good after the setup, I'd not be too concerned about the creaking on 1/4 turn.

I apply the pressure before and during the turn. I don't see the benefit in applying pressure afterward. The truss rod either does it's job or doesn't and applying pressure after the turn isn't going to help it work better in my view. Pressure during the turn takes pressure off the nut so it turns easier. This reduces stress on the neck. BUT you have to make sure you are applying pressure in the correct direction.
