I received a MIM P-Bass as a thank you gift from a friend about 10 years ago. Only recently have I gotten around to using it with some stuff in Garageband.

After replacing the strings with Boomers (all they had to pick from on a Sunday), the sound just isn't there. I'd used an old P-Bass on recording sessions back in '90-91. And the sound was great, and so were the strings.

Any help in getting that familiar sound with this one? Should I replace the pups?

Thanks

I replaced the factory pups with SD Quater Pounders. I use Rotosound flatwound strings and I could never get a better sound out of my bass than what I have now.

+1 on the QP's and Rotos.

I had Rotosound FW on my '67 Höfner (they were black like Paul uses in LIB movie). But sounded terrible. I keep D'Addario Half-Wounds on it now, and it sounds great.

For P-bass, I prefer the Roger Waters sound. Still need to up the pickguard to a tortoise shell from the WBW look.

The P-bass I recorded with, had RWs on it, and they were a bit of a lighter gauge. Just never found out what those were. Oh well.

Roger is a Rotosound flats user, and I am a Roger Waters/Pink Floyd mark. I have Roto 77's on there. Check out the D'addario Chromes.

Hmm, that's interesting to learn. I'll get out my Roger Waters' concert DVDs, and have another look-see. He seems to be playing RWs (round wounds), and he has no trouble bending them up.

I always think of FWs for the Klaus Voorman sound on Happy Xmas War Is Over single, and his Jazz Bass.

I would say he played 90% of the time in his career with Rotos played with a pick. Even says it on Rotos website under the description for the 77s. I have seen recent pictures where the strings definately do not look like Rotos, i.e no silk wrapping, colored ball ends as on the D'addarios.

Silk wrapping, Red for Rotosound

That's interesting to learn about Roger. But aren't Boomers also wrapped in red? At least the ones on my PB are.

About 20 years ago I used to use Rotosound Swing Bass strings on my Rickenbacker 4003S. It sounded ok, but recorded terribly. Switched to Smith strings for it, and WOW what a difference.
