I just got a new american standard pricision and I have to travel with it back to school. I don't know how safe it is to take it as an oversized carry on item and let them put it under the plane. Is the SKB case good enough to protect the p bass.. I'm really nervous.

The plane I'm taking is a small one and I don't think the my bass will fit in the cabinet... the plane is in the morning though. So I may have a small chance of having some empty seats, in that case, things would be simple. So I'm asking this just in case... Will it be safe to put it with other ppl's luggages?..

Thanks a lot.

Well they do make flight cases for just this reason. How small of a plane are we talking here? Generally small independent aircraft companies treat stuff fairly well. It's the Big Boys that kick your stuff around and lose it.

AFAIK, artists are no longer allowed to carry instruments as carry-ons. Which really kind of sucks. If you are THAT worried about the bass, then ship it to yourself, and make sure it's the type of shipping you have to sign for, and that it's clearly marked FRAGILE. That way you can inspect the package when you turn it in, AND when you pick it up. If there are any problems, don't sign for it, and ask for the manager.

Honestly, it's a gamble no matter what way you slice it. Good luck.

I believe to fly with an instrument on a commercial flight you have to have a flight case. Something about ATA regulations. Maybe not, but I think if you didn't they wouldn't be liable for any damage.

If you plan on flying regularly, like during holidays and any other breaks, and you're going to want to bring the bass with you, a flight case might not be a bad investment.

Otherwise, I have to say shipping it is a good option.

Believe me, putting a fragile sticker on a box being shipped by UPS/Fed Ex/USPS does absolutely nothing. It gets the same handling as every other package, which is to say rough.

The american standard I have was shiped from San Fran and somewhere along the way, DHL dropped or crushed the case, there's a big crack in the head stock end on the bottom of it. The thing is, it's a good sized crack that's purely cosmetic. There's so much foam padding that it wasn't even knocked out of tune. The SKB case is prety damn nice.
