What's the difference between putting your strings thru body or topload?

Thanks for your answers! :D

I have a P-bass with the option for through-body or not. I've strung mine through-body and bridge. There is slightly more sustain stringing through the body. It's really a matter of personal preference as to which way is "better". 6 of one, half dozen the other.

It's definitely a matter of personal preference...
However, there are one or two differences in the physics of the thing.
First, a string-thru bridge doesn't need to be massive. The strings are clamping it to the body, whereas a toploader is always being torn off the body, if you will.
Second, as there's a slightly longer amount of string being tightened, the tension is just a bit higher, which some say gives a different feel...
There's not a lot in it, IMHO. Having said that, where string-thru is available on my basses, that's what I use (not that there's actually a choice on mine!).

If stringing flats and you have a choice, use bridge through (top loading) stringing to keep the string straight. Some flatwound strings, especially Labella 760's which specify it on the package, don't like the bend in body through stringing.

+1 on that with LaBellas; however, little if any problem when using TI Jazz Flats, and no problems I've heard about with Rotosounds either.
